It isn't a lesson on protectionism, it is a lesson on ass backwards protectionism and the mercantilism being practiced against us.

The idea of real protectionism is to allow for the free import of all commodities in order to cheaply supply you industry. THEN, you have tariffs on imported manufactured goods in order to protect that industry from foreign competition. Instead, we do the exact opposite and wonder why our industry moves offshore where production costs are cheaper and they face no penalty in bring manufacturing goods back to our consumers.

At the rate things are going, the United States is going to be nothing but a source of cheap raw materials for the rest of the world's industry.

Several things in play here and I will try to address some of them.

If we don't stop the illegal immigrants from coming in and doing what work that there is, and put able bodied Americans back to work, not on welfare, the few people left paying taxes cannot pay enough to keep it all going.
If we don't quit shipping our jobs out of country, the remaining tax payers, can't pay enough to keep it going.
People must be taught that the job must pay what it is worth. A low skill job will pay less than one that takes skills. It does not matter what the worker wants to be paid, the job must dictate the salary. If you want more money, learn the skills and get a higher paying job, not force the company to pay more for unskilled labor. That is a job killer.
Young people must be taught that college is not the answer for all people. It has its place, but not everybody needs nor should go to college. Companies need to be taught the same thing. It is a drain on the American people and has been wrongly taught in the schools for a long time. Too many young people are deep in debt because they have been indoctrinated with this idea by the school system. I hurts the whole economy as they are paying (some of them) student loans instead of buying products from manufactures. Along the same lines, Colleges should not be raising their tuition when they have billions of dollars stuck back in some hole. Lots of the big Colleges fit this description.
Government officials, especially the elected ones, should not be paid much, if any, over the average wage in their State. That would make it a lot less attractive for career politicians. They also should not be able to set their on salary and raises. Should be voted on.
More stuff that needs to be fixed, but this would be a start. miles

Porssche and Mercedes have moved to Atlanta. Better business climate has something to do with that. Same reason BMW is in SC, Kia is LaGrange, Ga., Hyundia is in Montgomery. None went to the industrial/unioized Rust Belt.

True, but there is nothing keeping them from going to Mexico either.

the obligation to the stockholder at the expense of the American worker is the reason why we have the greatest disparity in income between the wealthiest and the poor.

The solution is to improve US competitiveness.

1) Make the right to work without being forced to join a union or pay them a civil right. If unions are so great then they will be able to convince the workers to join.

2) Shut down 90% of the EPA and kill every regulation passed during Tyrant Obama the Liar's reign. Kill the faux settlement agreements with the environmentally ill organizations.

3) Cut government spending and taxes by 50%.

4) Stop all government benefits for illegals. Make being an illegal alien a felony. Same goes for those that are helping them including sanctuary cities. Use the lists millions of "registered" illegals for Obama's amnesty and state drivers licenses as the starting point for illegals to arrest.

5) Kill off ObamaCare.

no, its just a reality

its pretty simple, even for someone who thinks they can throw out a term like economic illiterate

moving a plant to mexico is an economic decision driven to maximize profits - maximizing profits is the basis for stockholder investment. Why do you move to Mexico? A number of reasons but labor costs are usually in the mix.

if that is too difficult to understand, I could show you with sock puppets.

Trump's tax plan...

My 5-part tax plan involves reforming the income tax. The government confiscates way too much of your paycheck. The tax code is also a very complicated system that forces Americans to waste 6.1 billion hours a year trying to figure it out.
What does that tell you? It tells me that it's time we restore simplicity & sanity to the income tax. Here's my income tax plan:
Up to $30,000, you pay 1%
From $30,000 to $100,000, you pay 5%
From $100,000 to $1 million, you pay 10%
On $1 million or above, you pay 15%
It's clear and fair. Best of all, it can be filled out on the back of a postcard and will save Americans big bucks on accountants and massive amounts of time wasted attempting to decipher the tax code.
Our country is hungry for real tax reform. That's why we should implement the 1-5-10-15 income tax plan. And we need to enact [the rest of] my 5-part tax policy: kill the death tax; lower the tax on capital gains & dividends; eliminate corporate taxes; and a 20% import tax.

Of course labor is cheaper in Mexico.

The company isn't on the hook for OSHA, the EPA, Unions, a $15 minimum wage, (more like $15 a day), plus they don't have to march the Obamacare/Ins. Company plank to bankruptcy.

Part of Obama's plan from day one is re-distribute the wealth. He does that by making it harder and harder for American companies to make a profit, which is why they exist in the first place.

Government interference, via taxes, excessive regulation, subsidies and tariffs is the issue. If the government would get out of the way, well run businesses would succeed and poorly run ones would fail.
As it is now, well run businesses are seeking less government interference by leaving. And poorly run businesses are sucking on the government (taxpayers) teat.

It's really simple, Bean counters and CEO's need to find ways to cut costs and increase profits, or they lose their jobs.

Mexico, China, Vietnam etc,

Rules, Regulations, Taxes etc, They have little of it, We have tons' of it.
