I've got a couple of Rem 700 take off barrels coming, one .223, one 25-06. The .308 Ruger is the only short action I have at the moment, so I'm considering making it a switch barrel gun. It shoots alright as is, but I could use something milder on the shoulder for the wife and kids.

My current thought is poke the .223 to 22-250 imp, and then what to do with the 25 tube. If I lop off the threaded tenon and re-thread the chamber area, I can clean it up to any of the three chamberings. I'm leaning towards the 25-284, as I could see another one or two in the future and thus justify investing in a reamer. If I did a bob, it would likely be a one off.

I have the bob and bob improved but the 25-284 is a great option if you handload. the 284 case never got the attention that it deserved with the "rebated" rim.

+1

The 25-284 would be potent medicine.
I have a straight 284 and like that case a lot.
I've been thinking about having that chambering in my next custom rifle.

Good luck,

Don

Went through the same thing a fewe weeks back. I came back from the gun show with 257 bob, better bob, and 25-284 dies, because I could not make up my mind which to do to a 25 cal barrel that I came by (thanks Painless). I decided on the 25-284 and it should be at Mickey Colemans about now to get chambered.

I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects

I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

I wouldn't do a 25-284, bxroads and hondojohn couldn't get them to feed well and they obviously had grouping problems with the light contour barrels.

That speaks volumes to me.............grin

Have been guilty of both,in the past....though it stings to say it.

Life is a series of lessons and I've taken quite a few courses.................

The toughest thing about being a parent is wishing your kids could take shortcuts in life, ie not have to learn by f'n up. But I'm realizing more and more you need to let em f up on occasion to learn.

It hit home last night when my daughter said she didn't like poetry. I said when I was a kid I didn't like it either. Now I appreciate it as apparently simple on the surface, but trying to get the most done with the fewest words is very different in practice.

I opined that kids don't like poetry because they haven't lived life enough to fill in the blanks.

Since you've never had one you should listen to what Big Stick said, as you do with "groups". Funny how most Big Stick fans live through him versus their own experiences.....

The "Better Bob" offers no advantage over the 25-284.

Other than you could feed it off the shelf fodder. Wouldn't interest me,though it may others.

As to the 284Win "debacle" Fantasies,I can only say I've had 4(the three current 25-284's in the stable and a 284Win,that I rebarreled to the former, for the kids). Pards have 6-284's,25-284's and a 284 on various s/a Remmie platforms(mine are a 600 and 700's,The Pimp has a Seven and the others are 700).

All donors started out as .473" versions, none had boltface work, extractor work, follower work, feedrail work or feedramp work and live/breathe through issued Remmie mag boxes. I've ADL and BDL configurations both.

I concede the trend......................

Never said that it wouldn't feed, just NOTHING compared to a 308 or 30-06 based round. My standards are just higher. I'll not settle for mediocrity, would heep rather have a 1/2" longer rifle chambered in the 25-06. I've never understood the facination of short actions.

My 25-284 would feed two from the belly, reliably but not smoothly. If I put three in the belly (a tight fit), and closed the bolt over the top of them, upon cycling, the bolt would slide over the rim of the top round every time. In contrast, my .250 Ackleys would feed very reliably, but not as smoothly as the .243 based rounds with a factory shoulder angle.

Believe it or not,I've a 308 in a 700 or two,to compare the 25-284's too.

And 223's,223AI,Swifts,22-250's,22-250AI,243,243AI,6AI,7-08,SAUM,WSM,yada,yada,yada.

There isn't a more simplistic machine than a boltgun and if someone cain't get a round peg, into a round hole,it is very telling.

None of 'em mediocre, that's done been proved. As to duping short action capabilities in a long action?

That ain't my gig.............
