I am focussed now on the pending deer hunting season. My cousin and I are headed up to camp Friday morning. My long time hunting buddy from high school days is meeting us there at my cabin that day also. Later that night another great hunting buddy will be rolling in. The first stint at our camp runs through the 11th.

I will do it again the final weekend of the season with one or two of the other guys and my sons, one of whom has army national guard duty opening weekend.

I love the camaraderie, as well as the magic moments alone in the woods that are indescribable to the the non-hunter. Hearing each guys story over some drinks and good food after a day in the woods is certainly among the best parts of the whole experience.

Good luck to all!

Well, I guess it's oficially on now. We go to church in about an hour, and then I have to get up on the roof and blow out the gutters, and then spend the rest of the day watching football while I pack my gear for the deer opener. This is my yearly tradition, and at least for me, my unofficial "start" to deer season. We're in a new spot this year, between Emily and Outing off Highway 6. Our previous spot just got too crowded. Sure wish we had some private property, but it is what it is.

We have four guys hunting together this year, and will be staying in a small motel in Outing. It'll be crowded, as we only were able to get one room. At the time I booked it, we only had two of us going. My son's buddy got out of the Marines a couple weeks ago, and my BIL is going now too. We'll make do-it'll be fine. Can't wait to get into the woods. Nothing gets me going quite like deer opener.

Best of luck to all the Minnesota boys. 'Counting on the Camp Chickenbuck gang to carry the torch for us once again this year. Chickenbuck Joe showed us how it's done, now we have to match the little guy's accomplishment.

Good hunting guys. May the wind be in your face, the sun at your back, and a nice buck coming down the trail.

Depending oh how I feel in the morning I go, I'll carry the 30-06 pump or the m70 7x57.

Please do not expect that new location (am familiar) to be less crowded.

On the brighter side though, traditionally good deer populations.

Good hunting gopher!!

I was out at the new (to me) WI hunting area scouting this morning. Got a few more stand sites picked out. There seems to be a pretty good pocket of deer around the area we are hunting.

Even found a scrape line, which I haven't seen in MN since about 09.

Pretty uneventful opener up here !

Rain

Warm

1 deer sighted by 4 hunters, in 48 man hours on stand.

1 deer "farmed" by my buddy Joe !

[Linked Image]

Big bodied, healthy & minimal horns to impede the eating process !

The other 3 hunters, all had ground blinds to hunt out of, but no such luxury for me !

I sat in a tree stand, in the rain, in a flooded Tamarac swamp !

Well I will be using a shotgun! This will be the second year that my daughter is going. I would love to see her shoot a nice doe or little buck to build on her success of last year. And I really hope my dad can shoot a nice one.

To everyone going out this weekend, please pay particular attention to tree stand safety....don't take any chances! Also, know your target and what is beyond!

Good luck everyone, looking forward to the stories and pictures. Urrppp. Urrrrppppp. Urp.

Hunting has been a little harder for the Okies this year we have a bumper crop of acorns and the deer aren't moving as much but Mrs Mule did manage to take a doe last night with her new CVA Optima .

Where I hunt will dictate what I carry prolly .
If I sit where I bow hunt prolly use the TC contender .223 carbine this place has a herd of registered Angus on it and I don't want to buy one lol . If I hunt down south will take 7x57 lots of pigs there too.

Maybe this year Ill get my dads P17 Enfield out it hasn't kilt a deer since 1971 or so that would be kinda cool .

Nice Dave. I try to laugh...check engine...tow strap...but then I remember how much it cost me. I'm not to the point where I can even crack a smile yet.
