Time for another custom build. This will be the last one for a while.

Hart #2 3/4" Remington Contour Barrel
Remington CM Action
McMillan Edge Stock
PTG bottom metal

On the fence here. Can't decide between a custom 30-06 Vs. 300 H&H. I have both a standard and magnum action. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

30-06 is boring, the 300H&H is cool retro, but if there was another choice, I'd go 308 Norma mag just to be different... wink. You'd also get better brass life than the H&H with similar performance..

I passed on a pre-64 M70 300 H&H a few years ago. Didn't realize the value at the time, and it would have been a good buy at sticker price. I regret that one. Every day.

Anybody ever rent a reamer from 4H. I like the looks of the 308 Norma as well. Brass is also available. Never really considered this cartridge before.

That will be a light rifle in 300 H&H depending on scope choice.

Currently building a 30-06:

PTG Serengeti Reamer
McM Compact Swirly ADL w/ 14.5" LOP
Defiance Rebel LA
Obermeyer blank - Rock #3 dupe @ 23"
.250" lug +.75" shank
Bat SS trigger guard
Timney Trigger
Talley LW
6x42 scope

If doing a 300 magnum I would go with Standard fill vs Edge. The 30/06 should be fine with Edge.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

300 H&H improved (Weatherby)

Don't know what you would consider "superb" but it will be accurate enough for what ever you're gonna hunt with it.

you're sitting on two actions and this is going to be the last one for a while?

the only reason for a mag is to flatten trajectory...but it's real easy to load a 300 H&H like a 30-06....

What about a 30-06 A.I.. Nosler is showing 2985 fps with a 180g bullet using RL 22 from a 24" barrel.

What do you want to do with it? If weight is a concern, then the 06. Basically you are buying about another 200-250 fps with the H&H w 180gr bullets. Both of mine (on 70 actions, sorry) go about 3000-3020 fps with them. The 06 of course is a "gold standard". As to AI, nothing I would ever consider.

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

I was at the same crossroads last year.

I had donors in both bolt faces. I ended up choosing the H&H. I was considering a 300 Win Mag also.

A number of reasons.
1. 30-06 is too practical (boring), and the H&H has some panache.
2. I already own a bunch of 30-06 improved. ie 270's.
3. It would be replacing the last 338-06 I sold. Going to use 180-200gr bullets exclusively.
4. A natural match to my 375 H&H. Both have Echols legend stocks. The 300 should be done shortly and was planning on posting pics of the pair when completed.

With all that being said, go with what you like. There is no wrong choice.

I have a 300H&H and my only complaint with it is the cost of factory ammo. Obviously less of a factor if you enjoy reloading.
