Wiki has some interesting licorice facts. I always suspected that tobacco was sweetened, but never knew licorice was used for that. Also, too much licorice might be harmful. All this is about real licorice root, not anise, anus(!?!), or Twizzlers.
What fresh Hell is this?

You guys haven't lived until you've tried the Dutch salted licorice.
I can eat it all day long, but licorice lovers usually just try not to throw up. My dad was a fan of black licorice, but I only acquired the taste later in life. But when I was in my 20's I attended a Dutch Reformed church for several years, and I tasted some of that salted licorice. Nasty stuff, but great to suck on when you're workin' in the sun and need to keep your salt up.

We used to get the 3 foot long licorice whips at the movie theater when I was a kid.

I remember back when the Earth was flat, there was a licorice "stick" that came in a box. It was cylindrical, except that it was flattened into an oval toward one end and had (I think) the company's name embossed upon the oval. It cost a dime when candy bars were a nickel, and the licorice was much stronger flavored than Nibs. Anyone else? I was wondering if any one remembered that. Used it as a cough drop too.Strong stuff Smith Brothers Cough Drops.

When I was a kid we used to buy licorice sticks at the drugstore to chew on. It was an actual stick with bark on it. Not candy. Found out later in life that it was actually a root. You can still get it. Also used to go down by the creek where the red birch grew and had a twig of that in our mouth most of the day just scouting around. Too much of that used to give me nose bleeds.

Twizzlers sucho. It ain't licorice. Agreed, but alas, "common usage" has triumphed again over truth and reason. Hell, some people call Coor's Light "beer"! Yuck. Ya know.....you really spiked my interest when you posted about Black and Beer but ya had to go and ruin it....didn't ya.... Unless of course you're referring to the PBR.....

The Mariner mart in Poulsbo, WA has over 600 types of licorice in stock. I'm eating some Danish sweets salty pastilles as I type this.
