That's pretty good. I can see that 26" barrel getting over 3100 fps.

Guys depending on the LOT H 4831 sc should get you there or real close in a 24" bll.

I looked at Hodgdon's website and their velocity isn't even close.

Obey lawful commands. Video interactions. Hold bad cops accountable. Problem solved.

It's all barrels and throats, different powder lots, minor bullet dimensions and a million other factors. This is not at all uncommon.

Nosler Manual shows loads with several powders running over 3000 fps to 3077 from a 24" barrel. IIRC 7828 shows about 3015. It isn't any kind of stretch to get another 75-100 fps from a 26" barrel depending on throating, rifling, barrel internal dimensions etc etc.

I had a long =throated 7 Rem Mag with 24" Krieger that used 7828 with a 160 for about the same velocity.

Pressure? Who knows and who cares? I hunted the rifle all over the Continent for over a decade until the barrel wore out and used to toss brass away because it got ratty. No problems.

I have a Ruger 7mm RM made in 1976 that has accounted for several elk and a boatload of deer since it took its first animals in 1977, the darn thing is a death ray out past 500 yards and has produced several groups you could cover with a dime.

When I'm asked about the best combination deer and elk rifle these days I suggest the 300 WSM, Tikka with a Conquest 3-9 if they want rifle and scope best bang for the buck.

These days I use the 7 with 150's for deer and a 300 Weatherby and 180's for elk but the 300 WSM with 165 grain Barnes TTSX fits nicely in between and would work just fine if I had to choose one rifle.

H4831 has been 'interesting' for me through the years. Usually very consistent but sometimes dog slow. It performs good in some situations I've used it in and not so good in others. Sometimes it seems to have a lot slower burn rate than advertised with resulting slow vels at listed book max. As a gage, I measure it against H4350. In many applications, it gets the same vel as H4350 so I just add powder till I get that velocity. I do that with my 300 WSM and end up ~ 1 - 1.5 gr heaver than what Hodgdon says. I've done the same with my 30-06 recently as well. H4831 didnt group to well in my 06.

Yes that's the way h4831 works for some reason. Top velocities in one rifle and sort of a dog in others and I don't know why.

Usually it isn't a big deal though and when I see it the loads are usually about 100 fps or so below par. If it shoots I shrug... smile

If It doesn't I head for another powder. IME H4831 seems to work really well with 150's in the 7 Rem Mag.

Bob & Mr. B-

Years back when H 4831 was produced in 1 country and then moved to another country...the velocities in 270 W & 7 RM dropped to SUB,SUB par. I tried a few different lot #s with the same results.

Consequently I QUIT using H 4831 and switched to 7828 AND/OR IMR 4831.

UP TO DATE, Mule Deer has posted that H 4831 manufacturing has changed SINCE that time and it has become MORE consistent. I can't bring myself to try to tho.

It's been a while since I tested 150/160s in the 7 Mag but I have chrono records earlier....IMR 4350 did very well but...

AT Hagel PSI.----<no kidding>

i just worked up a load for a 24in stainless take off barrel i installed on an action i had laying around,

h4831 sc went 3083 ave for 15 rounds, 7828 was about 40 fps slower h1000 about 100 fps slower, 2 five shot groups went .65 moa at 100 yards, pretty finicky,,,, its going elk hunting tonight for the next 4 days,,,
