The discussion in the V edition of Sierra's manual says Charles Newton wanted his cartridge to be for deer sized game with a 100 gr bullet at 2800 fps. Marketing won out to reach the 'magical' 3000 fps which was unheard of in that day. Thus the bullet weight was reduced to 87 grains! They said the small bullet was adequate for deer and antelope if the shots were placed precisely.
