researching lemon law.

I had a 2003 Outback and that SOB used up more oil then it should have, brought it to the dealer back when I bought it and they said it was normal. Happiest day of my life when i unloaded the POS.

NOt sure what state you live in but hopefully she has all documented receipts. Hopefully it was at the dealers for a while as well. I just went thru the process with Ford and it was not pretty, Add them to the list of POS companies.

IF you think your Outback is a POS you should own my wife's Land Rover. Biggest POS ever sold. I can't imagine they get a lot of repeat buyers.

Land Rover Freelands have a design flaw in the engine that apparently can't be repaired, so the only choice is to replace the engine with the same engine and same defective design.

They had an inherent issue with the head bolt spacing which caused these head gasket failures, I thought this issue was fixed.

No one makes the bullet proof machines anymore, thank the EPA and idiotic federal regulations for that.

WOW an avalon having issues , my 99 is now owned by my Brothers MIL and has 300K on the odo. Only issue with it in all this time , replace shocks , tires, timing chain and a leaky head gasket that started at 200k.

Had a F150 2016 which was a lemon , the dealer that sold it had at least one more with same condition. You could not give me a Jeep anything , they are a dealer service dept magnet.

I think they were just a lot better than comparable cars of the time. Until the 80's, quality control was hit and miss. GM actually studied the Honda CX500, a liquid cooled, pushrod v-twin of 500cc (33 cubic inches) that put out 50 very reliable horses. They found the manufacturing tolerances were really good, basically a blueprinted engine. They adopted the concept, increasing reliability through the 90's. Still have stupid engineering/cost saving ideas that cause problems, though.

$6000.00 is more than a little unreasonable for a head gasket. tell her to take it to an independent mechanic who has a good reputation. A head gasket should run no more than $1500.00 and even that is high unless the engine needs to be pulled.

If nothing else, put in a remanufactured engine. It's cheaper.

A local lady once got a rotten deal, put together a huge sign to that effect, and started parading back and forth in front of the dealership. Generated an "OK, lets talk" deal that resulted satisfaction within about an hour.

The ruptured oil line was a known problem with the 2008 Toyota Avalon. It was a major topic on Edmunds' forum. Toyota used the same V6 in the Lexus, but the Lexus oil line was metal. I owned a 2008 Avalon Touring with the rubber oil line. I had the line replaced with the Lexus unit.

FWIW Lexus V6 engines were involved in this as well
