A proper built Swede 7x57.

This has been an interesting thread. Thanks for posting it. Considering that the 7x57 can be loaded a tad quicker, that puts it even closer to the factory rounds in the original post. Of course, the nice thing is that it's also pretty effective at mid-range velocities as well. I've been shooting some Prvi Grom factory loads for the brass. The advertised velocity is 2461 (24"), and while I haven't chronographed it to see how accurate that is, I can tell you that those rounds will definitely anchor game, even 300+ lb pigs. This fall I'll be playing with some 154-gr Interlocks at about 2500+/- and I expect similar results. John (AussieGunWriter) stated recently that the 7x57 is a hunter's cartridge. Along its entire spectrum of versatility, in my limited experience I have to agree.

And dang it, Ed. Stop showing that 7x57 Swede. One of these days you're going to be the cause of me parting with some hard-earned coin!

Yep, Ed's got some real pretty toys, I never get tired of looking at them.

I'll admit, the 7x57 has the history and panache of a classic, deservedly so. It's a great round that's stood the test of time.

The 7mm-08 has a different persona, a very efficient, no nonsense SA tack driver.

Different styles, different geneologies, similar overall performance.

Critters will never know the difference, just us Loonies...

I prefer the 7-08.
Have had a few 7x57's. Even being a Looney, got tired of all the individual quirks of the 7x57 brass and rifles. Same thing happened with the 6.5x55 Swede.

Currently own two 7-08's that I have not been able to spend enough time with. But one has accounted for one elk with 154gr Hornady IL. They are on the to do list, but all time is being dedicated to working out my 404 Jeffery, 375 H&H, and 9.3x64 Brenneke for my 2018 Buffalo/Sable hunt.

I also load for a friend who owns three 7-08's. They have accounted for many antelope, deer with 140gr BT, and one elk (140gr NP).

I have always considered the 7-08 a 270 short. At one point, I thought about building a 270-08, but no need with the 7-08 available.

I much prefer the 7-08 to the 308.

I have a .308 and a 7mm-08, like'em both.

I read here on the Fire (gotta be right), the 7mm-08 squeezes the "suck" out of the .308...

Now, don't know about all that. They're both good rounds, IMO.

To me, it's down to the individual rifle.

^^^^^ this. pretty much what a 280 Remington will do. 284 Win, 280 Rem, 7 SAUM... a 140 to 150 at close to 3000 is a beautiful thing

I always figured that if I was going to buy a wet weather rifle it would be a M70 Extreme Weather in 7-08, but as it is I just wind up clean and drying my Featherweight a lot between June and December.

I, too, like the 140 AB in the 7-08. However, I normally use the 139 Hornady FB Interlock. I haven't been able to tell a nickle's worth of difference between the two in performance and the Hornadys are a bit cheaper. Just my two cents worth

In the 7mm08 I like the 145 Barnes LRX, the 150 Scirocco II, the 160 Nosler AccuBond, and the 175 Nosler ABLR.

It's a great caliber for sure.

Guys, how about sharing your favorite 140 NAB, 130 IL, 145 LRX, 150 SSII and 160 NAB loads...

I would think the 175 ABLR would be moving pretty slow in the 7mm-08. To me, that more of a 7RM bullet. My 8 twist Shilen 7RM loves 168, 175 and 180 gr. bullets.

That's a good idea, but why not stick them on the "campfire loads" 7-08 thread? That way they'll all be in one spot.

If I was to buy a wet weather rifle,it would be a MRC SS chambered for the 7x57.

but I picked up a box of 7mm 180 grain ELD-Match, that I was going to road test in the 7mm Mauser..

My Ruger will be the test mule...

According to a Q/L scenario courtesy of a fellow forum member, it states the fastest powder in it
would be RL 26....which I have to test...

but if there is any interest, I'll post the results I find out...

Photobucket made a bad decision to hold photos hostage for $400/year, suddenly with no advanced notice. That's not the way to run a business. They were making money with advertising, had pop up's galore, ads everywhere.

So, here's my Bobby Hart 7mm-08 in Hunter's Edge, Conquest 3-9x40 with turret. Bobby used the std. Remington Sporter contour, 23". Imgur is very simple to operate. You Photobucket refugees, give it a whirl.

Once I settle on a load, I'm going to get a ballistic tape made for the Conquest, set up for that load. That's cheaper than a custom turret and should work about as well.
