Reading the whole article and seeing the picture of those communists was disgusting. Those Reds are not my fellow Americans and they never will be.

Yet sadly I live here. Sigh.

In 1984 WA passed a law that no municipality (counties, cities, etc) can create an income tax. So this violates the WA state constitution. Seeing as Sideshow Bob Ferguson is the Attorney General, who knows how this will shake out with our current commie WA Supreme Court justices who invent new law from the bench. I'd not be surprised if they allowed it to stand. We already have a ~10% sales tax (varies a little city to city). I neither work in Seattle nor live in Seattle proper nor do I make $250k a year so as of yet I remain unaffected by THIS idiotic law.

With all your barking I am slightly stunned with where you have chosen to live...

We are pulling up roots and moving next year. Piss on these liberals, their marijuana laws, gay pride, and high cost of living.

at the end of that article they say that people making $21K a year pay $3528 of it in taxes, while people making $500K pay $12K in taxes.

Instead of increasing taxes on the rich, they better figure out a way to keep a guy making only $21K from handing over $3500 of it to the government.

and a 24 year old making $170K? and saying she'd love to be taxed more.

the problem with youth is its wasted on the young.

Give them a little time. They'll get around to you eventually - they'll have to in order to try and support an unsustainable expense structure.

Do they really think high earners living in seattle won't just relocate their addresses outside the city limits??? I would, same way corporations relocate outside the US for tax reasons but operate inside the US for practical reasons.

Which is probably the ultimate goal. Get those locusts to spread across the country and destroy other areas.

Many cities and a few whole states are politically and economically at Stage 4 cancer. That cancer WILL spread throughout the rest of the country, as much as uninfected parts of the US wish it would remain localized. Actually, I was thinking that the accountants will be busier and the top tier will continue to take a paper loss...in fact it would be fair to say that only those who cannot claim expenses would be caught in the net. Likely all the top echelon public servants.

These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

Don't think that the city fathers in Seattle haven't thought of that - folks who move can expect never-ending "audits" to prove that they don't live in Seattle any longer, much like Rush Limbaugh being harassed by New York to this very day with his tax-seeking "audits".

G5m: This is just more evidence that demonrats/liberals/progressives have one objective above anything else and that is the destruction of capitalism/America!
Sad that.
It seems that the communists on the Seattle City Council are trying to out do the pathetic anti-capitalist anti-American politicians in kalifornicationkopia.
Pathetic.

Although Seattle may be demographically different because of the software industry, nationally only a small percentage of Americans earn over $250,000 individually or over $500,000 as a couple, somewhere around 3%.

This looks like common "feel good" legislation, the sort that allows politicians to make headlines and to look like they doing something to help the proletariat, while actually accomplishing very little. IOW, mostly eyewash, but eyewash that is likely to buy them votes because they come off as champions of the common man.

If Carissa Knipe is really making $170K, she should invest in a financial adviser who can help her make good decisions. Her web site, www.carissaknipe.com, doesn't strike me as a vehicle for making $170K, but what do I know.

Not necessarily. Rust Belt economies were based on manufacturing. Seattle’s economy is based on technology, and it’s roaring right now. Microsoft and Nintendo are just across the lake. Amazon, Facebook, Google, and some other big players are just north of downtown. Those companies are important, but the hundreds of smaller companies scattered across the county that support and rely on the bigger ones are more important. (And by “smaller” I mean from startups to $2 billion per year.) When that kind of money is on the table, nobody leaves.

To put numbers on it, when you make $250k/year, a 2.25% tax is $5,625, or just over a week’s wages. I’ve worked for a number of these companies, although I’m not making that kind of money yet. The biggest issue with living outside of town is having to commute up to 90 minutes each way. When you make that kind of money, every hour you spend in a car or on a ferry boat is an hour that you’re not in the office. A surprising amount of the things that generate promotions, raises, bonuses, etc. happens during informal chats in hallways and lunchrooms at the beginning and end of each day. If you’re not in those conversations, then you miss out. When a bonus is 8% or more of your current pay, a raise is 4-5%, and a promotion can increase it 15-20%, then you suck it up and drop a week's wages on income tax. You simply can’t risk missing the chance to make even more.

That said, there is some risk of people leaving their jobs to go somewhere else, and none of those companies want that. All across town, corporate HR, legal, and finance teams are probably looking for creative ways to make sure that these people never feel the taxman’s bite. They’ll pass the cost on to consumers, who will only notice a penny or two here and there on the cost of goods, or maybe price increases come every 10 months instead of once a year.

Arbitrary percentages are not Marxist. An equal share would be 50% to the state.

She works for one of the software companies I mentioned. The site is for her hobby. Pretty common here.

Depending on how social media responds to her comments, she might have to rely on that site for income in the very near future. That's pretty common here, too.

Do you know her?

The fact that she says that she is making $170K as a software designer/programmer/whatever doesn't make it so. Truth isn't a given in the virtual world.

LinkedIn. $170k is about right for what her profile says that she does at that company.
