Will a 260 (22"barrel) hold enough energy to cleanly take deer sized game out to 600 yards?? If so, what would your load be. My gun shoots 130 & 140 VLD's very well.

Yes....

If your gun likes the VLDs, run em.

I used a 20" Tikka CTR on several culling/cleanout jobs on WT out to that distance and further with the 140 VLDs, 123 and 139 Scenars. Never felt under gunned.

If you know your velocity and run the numbers in a ballistics program, you will see that at 600 yards, the .260 has plenty of horsepower for deer. I have not shot a deer with mine at that long of a range, but I did smack one at 430 last January, with a 129-grain Interlock-drt. If you like Bergers, then use them and you will do fine.

A sleek 130 at 2,850-2,900fps will get to 600 yds with a retained velocity of 2,000fps or so. I've seen my daughter shoot quite a few deer with conventional Ballistic Tips in the 120-140gr range, using light loads that gave impact speeds of 1,800-2,000fps. They penetrated just fine on broadside shots and wrecked vitals. I'm not likely to shoot a deer at 600yds, but I think the 260 would do it if need be.

Absolutely... I shoot 140 grain Amax in a 22" 260 and killed a bull elk with it at 500 yards with no problems whatsoever...

I'd fret the shooter/rifle not the .260 at those distances, especially when referencing "energy"....

Interesting. I am toying with maybe taking my .260 for a walk, or two during my Nebraska cow elk hunt. I have some 147 ELD-Ms loaded to 2724 fps. I am going to see if Re26 spices that up a bit, after I receive some more bullets next week .

Be interested in what you find with the R26. The 147s run 2725 out of mine over H4350 and getting short, I picked up some 26 to see if I could find some additional velocity. No joy in the 6.5 version, but had some good gains in the 6 CM with 105s...

IMR 4350 in the 6.5 looks like it's going to give me about 60 FPS gains, still with single digit ES, SDs.

What velocity are you getting from the 140? I also have some 140 Partitions coming for testing. I was told that re 26 gets the 140s some real good speed.

My pal from the Yukon, a few years back with one of the largest bodied bucks I've ever seen. Killed cleanly with one shot from one of my .260's I'd loaned him. If I recall, the shot was 400+ meters.

What bullet on the elk?

Just like every other cartridge speed/energy/effectivness question...bullets take center stage.

A good B/C bullet started at X velocity will be doing the same speed at 600 yards as a $hit B/C bullet started at X velocity at 400 yards...and so on.

Don't fret the round...it'll do just fine if you do your part.

If you can get your rifle to do what Berger says in the attached link it should not be to difficult. I have some 135 classic hunters to try .584 BC the 130 has .552. Looks great on paper if you can put one in the boiler room. That AMAX is a good bullet as well.

Good luck and shoot straight

Bob

Worked for a gunshop that specialized in tuning rifles. 260 was our main guys favorite round, took a whitetail at 660yd with his model 7 youth. He had a hart barrel on it and if I'm not mistaken it was only 20in.

I forgot to post a followup to this. I found the Re26 to be fantastic with the 147 ELD-M. I got it to near 3000 fps, but it was a bit warm and the es was not good. I backed down to 2880 and it shot real well. I finally backed down to 2825 fps with a short es. This load is under moa easily and mostly around 1/2 moa-depending on how well my eye is working that day. The 140 Partition blems that I bought to try shot like crap, but I really got high velocity with the Re 26.

One interesting thing that I found, was that after sighting the 147 in at 200 yards, subsequent dialing on my scope exactly matched my 129 Interlock load even though it is 200 fps slower.

In my rifle, the IMR4350 was faster than H4350, using 129 Interlocks. The IMR 4350 was just behind my Re17 load, which produced just over 3000 fps.

My 260 rifles, with my ammo, and me shooting will not be getting deer at 600 yards.
Not unless it was some hail Mary lucky shot.

Better 260 rifles, better ammo, better shooters can do 600 yards consistently.

I can tell you for a fact a .260 AI will take down an antelope at 500 yds. I was standing right next to Bobcape last week when he did it. smile

26 inch barrel though, I believe.
