Been thinking about putting one on a Marlin for timber hunting whitetails. Hate to do it, but age isn't helping my eyes any with the iron sights. I'm not one to shoot past legal time, would the small objective get the job done in the woods?

Scope the Marlin. I have nine of them, five of them wear glass. I take them out in public. 1-4 is a good choice.

1-4 is a good choice. There is no shame in putting glass on a Marlin. Several of mine wear them. No one seems to object.

Any advantages of the 1-4 over the 1.5-5? Other than for grouse shooting that is.
Yes, I know, the 1.5-5 is a VX3 so it has "better glass?"

Yes, I know, the 1.5-5 is a VX3 so it has "better glass?" FWIW Ive used both extensively and the only REAL advantage I ever saw was that the 1-4 VX2 would glare out looking into the rising or setting sun, the VX3 did not....good to know when hunting leopard.

Thanks, Tom, it's worth quite a lot actually (even though I don't expect to ever hunt leopard).

I hunt coyotes with mine and have no restrictions on hunting hours. If it is light enough to see a coyote coming in with my eyes I can kill him with my 1-4x20. When I used to hunt deer back in MN and WI my goto scope was A 1.5-4.5x20mm Weaver V-4.5, never had an issue of not being able to kill a deer if I could see him with my bare eyes. With low power scopes objective size has little infuence.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I recently traded into a Whitworth .375 . No real hunting plans for it, occasiontional range trip and maybe try on a hog. Old eyes dampen the enjoyment of iron sights. Thinking of scoping. Is the Leupold VX2 , 1-4x20 man enough for .375 recoil? Thanks. Yes.

Good to know about the 'light wash' Gunner if you're doing it right, the leopard blind wont be situated looking into the setting sun, so no biggie ...but Ive inadvertently run into the problem hunting elk one morning...
