Happy New Year everyone. A new year to get (or stay! ) in shape. I came close to reaching my 2000 trail mile goal last year (1933); going to try again this year. I plan on participating in the 2018 Bob Marshall Open again this year- the traverse will be the longest to date- depending on route chosen, 140+ miles. I enjoyed elk season thoroughly this past fall (despite not harvesting one) due in large part to being in good shape- my goal is to be in even better shape yet from the upcoming season. So please feel free to check in with your workouts, fitness goals, questions and anything else! Mike

After packing a cow out 3 miles one way in crusty snow the last two days, my fitness regime is going to include 16 oz curls for a while.
Good luck to all who try to match.

First workout of the New Year today (Tuesday). Cardio, mostly upper body, ski erg machine and arm bike for 40 minutes combined, followed by 20 minutes on the stationary bike.
I applaud all of the New Year's resolution new people in the gym, but it does get crowded this time of year. At least for a few weeks.

I am just recovering from a self induced low back strain that occurred 7 weeks ago. I am back on my cardio routine but no lifting for a few more weeks. I leave next Monday or Tuesday for a 2-3 week wolf/coyote hunt in Idaho and suspect that snowshoeing and pulling my sled may kick my butt. At least the snow shouldn't be as deep as last year. Not necessarily backpack hunting related, but I plan to hit 405 for deadlifts and 315 for squats this year.
I am moving from 450 ft ASL to 5500 ft ASL within the next month, and after my experience hunting elk at 8-9k ft this year I will focus on uphill hiking with weight in my pack and the stair master this year, along with getting up above 8k as much as possible this summer.

Dog hikes in 12-15 F with some wind. Keep moving and all is good. Stop and the chill comes quick. Merlot loves it.
Stairmaster: 30minutes, 4/5 days per week. Weights--3/4 days per week, the usual, but cutting down on the waiting between sets. Core items--wall balls, planks.
Need to lose a few, so paying more attention to the eating. Upping the vegetables and fruits. This years protein kill tastes about as good as it gets.

That's not surprising. It takes more than just glutes you can crack walnuts with. You must also project the aura of the most interesting man in the gym. And that my friend takes panache. Google it.

Unfortunately age has had a vapid effect on your panache. A grown man, dare I say statesman, showing off by cracking walnuts between his cheeks in the gym most definitely lacks panache. Just think what that looks like? Ohhhhhhh, really just stop, before it gets out of hand.

Tiny Elvis is a hero.
I got hit with that flu for what seemed to be 5 weeks. I need to get cardio back in order. However, Strength is doing well. I think right now I am at a lifting plateau and need to shake it up. I really don't need to get stronger but I want to get freak strength back. So I am continuing.
Yesterday I did 315 inclines, 150 curls and 525 Deads. I need to get the Deadlift weight up. I am thinking front squats. I need to get the cardio wolf going. I need to get two two hours straight by June. Otherwise stuff is good.

Stairmaster 30min
Deadlifts, standing press, squats, seated rows, calf machines, more deadlifts.
Finished on Stairmaster for 10minutes
Ok, now best of luck with the ankle and keep the back of the gown tied up. There are other patients the nurses have responsibilities for, and they can't be playing grab ass with you and give them the attention they deserve. It will only be for a few days. so try....

EMOM again today.
1 minute rounds & 10 rounds per.
Exercise Weight Reps kettlebell swings 45 lbs 15 burpees body 12 in and out crunches body 18 skull crushers 45 lbs 20 Turkish getups 20 lbs 3L & 3R
6 Turkish getups in a minute might not sound like much but it kicks my butt.
What would Porter Rockwell do?

Thanks Harry, your concern is touching. Just like what the nurses will be doing as they crowd around my bed, ignoring the other patients.

Those DL numbers make my back hurt just reading them...

Did lower body today. Goblet squats, back squats. hamstring curls, glute kick-backs, one-legged stuff on the Bosu for balance, and abs. No dieting required, I'm down to 198.

I eat pretty healthy- lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat, etc; but no dieting- I consume a lot of calories in a day and won’t shy away from foods like cheeseburgers, pizza (and IPA’s too). I’ve found putting in 30-ish miles a week let’s me ignore calorie counting or forbidden foods- much easier that way.
3.5 very chilly and blustery miles for Tiny E and I this evening

Update on ankle surgery, I postponed it for a short time. Got a second opinion from another surgeon who uses a different technique that's much less invasive, arthroscopic vs a large open incision and screws to fasten the bones vs screws and a plate. Everything I've read says arthroscopic is the way to go, just waiting on the CT scan to make sure it can be done arthroscopically.
So Harry, you'll have to put up with my comments for a bit longer.
As in, Jump rope? Seriously? What's next, a couple sweet tats and a 'do rag?

As in, Jump rope? Seriously? What's next, a couple sweet tats and a 'do rag? Your comments are normally fine until you get into the sexual innuendos. And then they become a little out there. Like they say, you can BS the fans, but not the players. I think a 'do rag would be post a pic material. Come on, just do it. The less cutting and bondo they have to mess with should be a plus.

Sheesh, bondo is ten year-old technology, they don't use that stuff any more.
You'd think a man of your caliber and erudition would know that.
PS, no innuendo here, those are all true stories. I'd tell you about the three women who accosted me in the hot tub this afternoon, but that'd curl your hair. And yes, I know you don't have any.

Doubt it'd be possible to over-analyze something irreversible like bone fusion surgery... so I think that's wise. Walked 5 this morning. Really need to get revved up for 2018. So far I'm a slacker.

20 minutes on row machine.
Circuit program x3 of each of the following with no rest between exercises but 1 minute rest / water break after each circuit: -Deadlift clean and press with 50 pound bar (10) -Bicep curls 50 pound bar (15) -squats 50 pound bar (50-60 reps each time with some slow some quicker mimicking body pump routine) -pushups (20) -oblique crunches (20) -walking lunges with 50 pound bar (30) -tricep dips (25) -farmers walk across room and up two flights of stairs and back with 35s in each hand
10 minutes of stretching (i have found as of the last few years a little less intensity and 10-15 minutes post-workout stretching are requirements for me to avoid injury).

Even Elvis needs an occasional night off. You'll wear the blue suede shoes right offa that critter. Had a weather window, did my 27-mile conditioning ride. Whipped my ass, but I feel great as usual.

Stairmaster--20min
Deadlifts x8 with adding weight
Dumbell curls x3 Overhead press x3
Leg machine calf presses x3--Knee pain has left since I started working on the calfs. Interesting discovery.
Back and knee stretches--seems as if the bulging disk has decided to reside in its' proper place. Thigh going numb is almost a thing of the past. Almost....
5x20 on roll-out wheel. I'm going to feel that tomorrow.
C2 Rower interval--30min

Awesome news both! Good job. Payoff for all the work. Yeah... it's all connected through the knee area, or it seems like it is. The IT band issues I've been battling are weird like that too. Where the pain manifests has no obvious connection to the bands, but clearly if they tighten up it pulls other "stuff" out of position and add in a bunch of repetive motion (pedaling) and the result is "ouch". It was starting to kick in on my right leg today. If I start trying to bang long distances again- 40 to 60 miles- I'll HAVE to figure out WTF because it starts to kick in around 25-30 miles just like clockwork.
The CENTER will hold.

Repetitive stress always warrants extra attention and rest breaks as the years add up. Give it a rest before you push into the danger zone and 40-60 may be a breeze. You go just as far, it just takes a little longer. It's not a race.
Yesterday was a good day....Shoveled and pushed snow for around 1.5hours, very limited back strain and the knee was just going along for the ride. Odd thing to me was the PT people and the Docs never mentioned the calf when it came to the knee. They looked at the pics and said that is a pretty good knee. Don't know why it hurts. A month or so ago, I just thought you never do calf specific so why not. Lucky....
Addition: And the more I do yoga stretching, the better the flexibility. It isn't just for the girls.

Oh but I'm a big fan of gals in yoga poses. Haha. I've moved away from rides that long. I think it becomes almost counterproductive, or perhaps to say it better, it opens the door to other issues that might make the gains not worth it. My 50+ rides were very therapeutic for my noggin rehab. One of the strangest symptoms of the [bleep] injury was a very tangible anxiety that I wasn't actually ME. Weird stuff, but it was as real as it gets at the time, as in for many months, and actually if you've BTDT, it makes some sense. I dissolved for several hours. I can't remember any of it. When I re-assembled (that's what it felt like, coming to in the ER) I was very different. Was I still Jeff? It was certainly questionable. ANYWAY, I can report that there ain't nothing like suffering in a body, to re-anchor your "self" in that body. So I suffered, a lot, and it was awesome. But now I'm doing much more intense but shorter rides. My 27 miler is a brutal route. I'll try to put up a chart of it. It's not for the faint of heart, literally, but it's "only" takes 2+ hours. 50 miles takes forever and I question whether that kind of endurance training is actually net-positive in the long run. (Always best to end punnily)
The CENTER will hold.

I've been Crossfitting religiously for the last 2 years straight. Am in the best shape of my life. I'm a lifelong long distance runner and have all but given it up to Crossfit. I love the constantly varied workouts. Have done some things in there that I never thought I would ever be able to do. Bench 260, Deadlift 425, Back squat 325, double unders with a jump rope, bar muscle ups, etc. Gonna help me out when I hit west TX this year with mulie mike for aoudad sheep!

Nope, arthroscopic. and less hardware left behind. The surgeon had me do a CT scan to make sure he could do it arthroscopically because the ankle is out of whack.
He called me to discuss the results, said, yes he could do it arthroscopically, and then added something to the effect of "man, your ankle is really messed up."
I just laughed and said thanks for bringing that to my attention.

do they (you) have a thumbnail sketch of what your recovery will entail? Thanks for asking. Eight weeks in a hard cast with no weight-bearing, it takes that long for the bones to knit together. I'll do what I can in the gym: upper body, off leg, and whatever I can do along the lines of leg lifts, cable flies with an ankle cuff, crunches, and machines like hamstring curls. After that, several weeks in a boot with gradual weight-bearing and exercise. I asked about PT sessions and it's not like re-hab of a knee or shoulder where you're restoring range of motion because there is no range of motion. So it's mostly just strengthening, balance, and all that. I'll need to work on cardio too, stationary bike and stairs if I can. Supposed to be about 8 months until you're back at 100%. Just in time for hunting season.

Maybe I'm just extra-sensitive to this since I'm finally 99% clear of my bout with PF after 18 frikkin' months, but when I simulate walking with an in-articulate ankle I feel weird pressures in the arch of my foot. Careful there.

Careful there. The thing is, I've been walking on an inarticulate ankle for over a year now. The tip-off was when I started having hip problems on that side from limping and favoring the ankle.

Smoke, I thought I saw you at the gym tonight. I guy sitting in a chair with a cast on his foot and a pair of crutches. But then I realized he was sitting, watching TV in the men’s locker room. Had it actually been you, you would have chosen a vantage to keep your eyes on the ladies working out. Heal fast, my friend!

Just doing some leg lifts on the floor, with an extra 8 lbs on one side. Haven't used the prescribed painkillers for 2 days now which is a plus, ibuprofen and elevation seem to be working.
I found out first-hand what they mean by "opioid crisis." Didn't sh** for 3 days. If I'd had a tape measure with me this morning, I'm confident I would've set a new world record!!

In an effort to bring this back to topic, I'm slowly getting back into it. Several bike rides earlier in the month then derailed by the bug. This week back at it on bike and treadmill. Did a some weightlifting before my son's soccer game. I'll be sore tomorrow but I knew that would be the case. Getting ready for elk again this fall, drop camp style.

I'm getting ready for elk too, backpack style. Getting off the painkillers post-op and doing those leg lifts were the first two steps in a long road to make that happen. Thanks for making the effort to bring us back on topic. That Jeff_O really gets sidetracked sometimes.

Backpack style is what I want to do next year. Hunting pard isn't into it so it'll probably be solo DIY.

Be sure to think through the logistics of a solo backpack elk hunt if you get one down. Can be daunting! It's stopped me from packing solo into a couple NE Oregon canyons that I know hold elk.

27 mile hill ride... foam-rolled my IT bands prior, had zero issues on the ride so that was encouraging.
Didn't feel uber-strong, and my buddy was pushing the pace fiercely... hurt.

Saturday I hit the Y and did workout A of SS. Of course I went too heavy too soon after a long layoff.
Sunday - Went on a 4.5 mile hike with local group. Wanted to see how my first rendition of day pack rode and it was good to get out on the trail. Pretty mild in both temp and terrain. Pack setup rode well but may swap out the bag for a little more room/organization. Flung some arrows in the afternoon. Overall a good day.
Today - 30min on bike at a recovery/moderate pace to clear the legs.
MTwarden - talked to a guy on the hike that told me they have an adventure race in the ANF similar to what you do in the Bob. I may try to do the short one this year, we'll see how training and other commitments go.

Scott- not familiar w/ ANF? The guy who started the Bob Open raced the Alaska Wilderness Classic several years and thought why not in the Bob Marshall complex- he’s been organizing it for about 7-8 years now.

Have been trying to do ~50 miles on the bike trainer per week. Have been swimming on Sundays but plan to increase the swimming to 2 or 3 times per week. Also thinking I might get a fat tire bike so I can get the hell out of the house for some bike time.

A high quality bicycle is a beautiful thing. I say do it!
Started in on next winter's firewood today. Only about 90 minutes but, got started, and I can feel it tonight. It's not yet clear to me how exactly it'll play out; some years there's more cutting than splitting, some years the other way. Still walkin' my woods going "hmmm". At 25 years in we've largely accomplished our main goals in terms of clearing and thinning different areas, and at least so far there's no major windfall events that are in reach of my truck... so, hmmm.

Short treadmill run after bodyweight strength stuff yesterday morning. 60min on the bike this morning. Starting to get used to the saddle again but it's tuff. Hope to get a hike in this weekend somewhere.

Smoke - Good to see you back at it.
Took my oldest son to the gym yesterday. At 18 he's finally showing an interest in strength training. Did squats, presses, DL and he wanted me to look at his form on bench so we did a little of that too. I didn't let him do deads since he couldn't get into good form - scared cat back. We'll work on that. Lots of setup changes between sets as he's 6ft 140lbs and I'm 5ft6in and 185lbs. Good time though.
I'm waiting to see how sore he is today.

Burpees, and pull-ups. 100 of each as fast as I could. Rested then did kettle bell swings, snatches and goblet squats in Tabata type cycles. Barbell squats then clean and press today. Most likely do some jump-rope and push ups after I'm done, we'll see how it goes.

My two fat welfare recipients sure couldn't keep up with him. To be honest though they wouldn't need a jacket. Hearty fur and fat keep them toasty. Weight carry, stack and condition today. Take my 45 lbs and 35 lbs plates and carry them from my weight room up the stairs to the living room. Do a some bear crawls back and forth. Mix in some jump rope, kettle bell stuff, burpee's and so on. Then carry all the plates back down to the weight room. A really good all over body work out and gets the heart pumping good.

The trip up the ridge last night took a bit longer with all the new snow and drifting. With all the snow we have there will probably be some left for Smoke to come shovel after your all healed up.

AKA pustules and rashes. Ya never know what you'll catch from Gym Wenches! Sounds like the recovery at a minimum is eventless so far. Cool!! "Events" are not a good thing in a medical scenario. Got fair weather as far as my phone can see. We've had a VERY mild winter here. I've been chasing some major new business; gotta unplug from the chase and get my ass outside.

Well, I bit the bullet and bought a fat bike. Borealis Flume (Colorado company, did that just to help with Smoke's recovery.) I rode a friend's bike for a while Saturday, stewed on it Sunday, and then purchased Monday. Did about 10 miles and only got kicked off of one trail. Below zero temps are not kind to the cell phone, so not really sure how far I ended up going. Now I just need another $500 worth of crap (frame bag, lights, pogies) and she'll be good to go.

70-80 lbs sandbag work. Alternated various exercises and stair climbs. Between each set of exercises I kept it on my shoulders, or bear hugged it and carried it around with me while I sucked in some much need O2. Never set it down for 35 minutes. Felt like I could float when I did. Caught my breath and knocked out a few sets of dead hang pull-ups. Resting today and making food for my weekend at work meals.

29 mile ride. Embarked from my buddy's place and did a route we hadn't done in a while because we'd had a nasty dog interaction a couple years ago way up this rural Coast Range road. Anyway-killer route, super steep. And 61F and sunny.

Did upper body cardio today, 25 minutes of intervals on the arm bike and then 25 on the ski erg machine. Then three sets of four different leg lifts. I'll have to remember to wear long pants next time, there was a near riot as all the women were jostling for position to look up my shorts while I was doing the leg lifts. Good thing I wasn't commando, no telling what would've happened.

I have to give you props for maintaining a vibrant fantasy life even in incipient old age. What? You don’t believe it’s true? Smoke doesn’t BS about what goes on at the gym. Well, maybe about not being commando but I’m sure we can overlook that.

Sunny today and in the mid-40's here. I sat on the back porch (south-facing) with my shirt off for a while, vitamin D being important in bone generation and healing.
It was nice until I saw the two neighbor ladies ogling with binoculars, I had to go inside, I felt so cheap.

I had project meetings all weekend so no hikes or snowshoeing. Back on the bike this morning for an hour.
Jeff O - Thinking I have to make some fit changes on the bike. Probably bring the bars back an inch, feeling too laid out which causes me to come forward in the saddle. Can't bring the saddle forward any more. Thoughts on this?

I'm certainly no bike fit expert, but you absolutely want a correct fit. Do you have any hand numbness after a long time in the saddle? That'd be another sign of being too far forward.
Sounds like you have two options. The obvious one would be a new stem; I haven't ever done that so I can't really opine BUT try to get one that doesn't require all your controls to come off the bars to swap out. The other option is a seatpost with less (or no) "setback". That I have played with on my "winter" bike and it's easy and cheap if you just try inexpensive steel seatposts at least until you find what works. Many seatposts have a ton of setback so depending on what you have going on now, this could be your huckleberry.
The other thing you are changing there, though, is the geometric relationship between basically your pelvis and the center of rotation of the cranks.... so just watch your knees at first for signs of strain.
You could always pay a pro to fit you. I found those guys a bit woo-woo for my tastes but that's probably just the couple guys I talked to. Certainly, it can be approached as a science and there are some very astute bike fitters out there.

I am also no bike fit expert, but I have found that if you ask a couple questions, many bike shops would be happy to give you a 5-minute "fit" for nothing. Regardless of how much they know, it is pretty helpful to have your bike on a trainer and another person to observe and/or adjust. If you don't know what you are doing (and I don't) they can usually get you in the ballpark.
"I'm looking for a new stem, because I'm not sure my bike fits me right." should lead to a conversation about what stem you are looking for, and then a "bring the bike in some time". They also will have a box of used/returned/no longer cool anymore stems that they might be willing to let you try or sell you for $5-10.
If things go that way and you get more than you paid for, then you know where to go when you need other stuff.

Thanks. I hadn't thought about the saddle stem but I think that's where I'll start. I had the quick bike fit done (swapped the neck from the fork stem to bars for a shorter one but it's still 3" long) but it's been 5-6 years and things have changed.
Yep, used/returned/uncool is always good.
I knew when I bought the bike it was aggressive but seems to really bother me more this year. Its a Fuji Roubiax ACR1.0.

Fit gets really crucial as the mileage goes up. Things that you barely notice 10 miles in can be excruciating @ 50 miles... hand or foot numbness, butt or taint "issues", etc. But those are all ancillary to the real reason to get a fit that works: knees. Just remember little changes go a long way... you mentioned an inch... that'd be a BIG change! Just go easy at first and listen to your precious knees. I don't know a better friend to a middle-aged man than a good road bike. Well, maybe a still-horny wife. Edit: I like to bring the tools necessary to make fit adjustments along on a long ride (when I'm messing with fit, I mean); you can really feel small changes once you've "acclimated" to a given fit for say 10 miles. I mean, raise or lower the seat by as little as 1/8" and it's like "whoa!".... I can feel the changes (and their effects) much better than if I'm just sitting on my bike out in my man cave "imagining".

Hope she feels better.
I agree about the small changes. I did that with the seat height, Had some knee pain until I dropped the height about 1/8" or so. Don't notice as much on the road but the trainer can be torture and I'm only at an hour. I'm hoping to do 1.5-2 hrs in another month or so.
I'm going to look for a new saddle stem and play with that position first.
Thanks.

Jeff- hope she gets on the mend quickly
I did “Murph” this evening
1 mile run 300 air squats 200 push-ups 100 pull-ups 1 mile run
this evidently was on of Lt Michael Murphy’s favorite workouts, they (Navy SEALS) did this workout with 20-ish pounds of body armor on!!! Lt Murphy was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan and awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. They named this workout in honor of his service.

Did mostly upper body today, also worked in two leg machines that don't require weight on the ankle, and leg lifts. Felt good.
The flu sucks, good luck with the Dr. JO.

Good luck with the flu....If there is a next time, don't wait 10 days, if one is not coming around in 4 and getting worse. This is a potent strain and even some of the young and healthy are having a nasty time.

Went on a shoulder season elk hunt in central MT last weekend that required snowshoes which gave me a whole new outlook/ perspective on fitness/ workouts. Went with a buddy who didn't fill his non-resident tag during the general season so I was focused on getting him one. The hike in wasn't so bad at about 30-40deg as we were able to stay on top of the snow for the most part. Got in to a few cows bedded down under the trees and out of the wind at the base of a hill. Buddy and a guy we teamed up with both got small cows. I passed on a shot because I knew packing out 2 was going to be difficult and thankfully my freezer is full. Boy am I glad I passed. I packed out 2 front shoulders for my buddy and we post-holed most of the 2+ mi back to the truck because we could not stay on top of the snow with the added weight. It was exhausting in the crusty windblown snow, never-mind the steady 20-30mi winds once we got out from behind the hill, and the plummeting temperature- it read 5deg when we got back to the truck; god knows what the wind-chill factor was. In the end we estimated we snow-shoed at least 6mi that day. Going to have to adjust my workouts accordingly.
We have enough youth, how about a fountain of SMART???

snowshoeing is a wonderful way, well maybe not wonderful :D, how about effective, way to stay/get in shape; in addition to the aerobic benefits- it does a great job of working your core, entire legs/glutes and really smokes your hip flexors and abductors. It also does a decent job with your upper body with the poles.
it’s the reason I try and maximize my snowshoe miles prior to the Bob Marshall Open- it is the best way I’ve found to mimic best the rigors of that event

Been mixing it up with my sandbag and kettle bell. Five Turkish get-ups each side with my 35 lbs kettle bell. Clean and press the sand bag and do five squats. Carry the bag down stairs and either do five lunges each leg, or five burpee/sandbag cleans. Drop the bag and do five dead-hang pull ups. Clean and press the bag and head back up stairs. Pace around with the bag on my shoulder until I catch my breath enough to hit another round. Got ten rounds done in about 30 minutes and had that great post workout feel all the rest of the day. Been digging on this type of workout. Really hits my core and is pushing my endurance level. Heart pounds heavy the entire time and I have to focus on controlling my breathing. Well worth the price of a couple sacks of pea gravel and a rusted up kettle bell from 2nd hand Sports.

Did upper body cardio today, leg lifts on the floor, and a few leg machines. 25 minutes of intervals on the arm bike, then 20 minutes on the ski erg, then machines. Felt good.

4 trail miles for Tiny E and I and as many squalls that came through- it’s now snowing in earnest now; I’m confident that we’ll see Spring by the end of May

Four miles on trail for Onyx and I tonight. Wet snow blizzard and the MicroSpikes were balling up. I had to scrape them on logs and stumps every couple hundred yards coming down.
