Look close at the features. Hint 99A .

It says 99A in the auction, and the barrel says 99A, and the wood says 99A, but the lever safety does not say 99A.

Photos don't show the tang so I can't see if it was drilled and tapped for a tang sight. A 99E receiver would not have been. Of course a 99A receiver would not have been either because it would have had a tang safety on the tang. Has a cartridge counter window. Most E's did not but some later ones did. All 99A's did.

Is it not d&t on top? Maybe an early 99 shipped back for factory refurb in 70's?

Post mil A with lever safety?

Forearm don't look like it fits right to me.

Serial #?

Pull that forearm when you get it and let us know what model it started life as.

Forearms often fit like that on the later guns.

Does not appear to be drilled and tapped on top from what I can see. If I had had more time I would have asked for the serial number but the auction was nearly done. I decided I needed it as a shooter no matter what it was anyway so I went ahead with it.

I'm not an expert but the buttplate looks like one from a Ruger 10/22? Never seen a carbine buttplate on anything but a carbine. Interesting gun tho.

If that is a M99 original SRC buttstock and you are looking to peddalit, I could take that one off your hands

if you look at picture 5 of 12 you can see the receiver ring with the model up top.
with the williams side mount it doesn't appear that the ring or tang was D&Ted .
the rear fold down looks like its a williams also?

Hadn't noticed the carbine buttstock (almost surely not an 1899 SRC buttstock, but very likely a 1930's H).

Roy, you probably have yourself another project - restore an old 99H in 250-3000.

If you look at the front receiver ring I'm going to guess this is an original 99E in 250-3000 in the 300,000 range, rebarreled by the factory in the 1980's. What do you think?

Could be total franken gun.. I'm going with a 99H barrel band redone by factory.

As I said, pull the forearm when you get it and let us know what it was. Hope the buttstock/buttplate match receiver.

I'm not as sure as you guys on the buttplate. I'll go back and look.

Have to view the enlarged one, I missed it because on the smaller pic that stupid "SOLD" banner is over the top of the buttplate.

The point on the cheeks is definitely from an earlier rifle, not an 80's saddle gun.




I can't tell what plate that has on it.

hey! i have been buying 1894 winchesters for 55 years and i got glassy eyed bu a nice Flatband and didn't look at the left side.
sure enough 4 gaping holes.
then there was that name engraved 99 284..............

Look at the bright side. It's a 30's gun with a 1-10 twist barrel. Maybe I can shoot 80 grain Barnes ttsx in it.

It has finally arrived. #368,xxx. Matching buttstock, buttplate (like Keiths above), reciever. Barrel is a 1-10" 99A. 99A forearm is coming off. I have a proper barrel band carbine forearm #351,xxx that will make it look a little more acceptable. So it's barrel band carbine again but with a little longer barrel and 1-10" twist.

Interesting in that the barrel wasn't set back to rethread it for the old flat threads. The forearm fit right and everything indexed and lined up as if the V threads went right together with the flat thread receiver. ??? Calhoun *may* be right, rebarreled at factory. How would you ever get the v thread barrel to line up perfectly with the flat thread receiver and end up with the forearm hanger in the right spot otherwise?

I can live with that for a shooter. Scope and mounts came off. Looks real cool with the right barrel band forearm on it and a little longer sight radius.

Did you have to put a groove in the barrel or was it already there?

I had to. The barrel is a 1971-1981 99A 250 Sav, so no groove.

It was already drilled for sling studs, been reblued, forearm isn't the best, drilled for sidemount. It's a shooter.

Looks like it came out a respectable composite. I'd certainly shoot [bleep] crap with it. I'd also put on a rear peep. How's the reblue job look?

The quality of the reblue looks good, although shinier than factory sheen would have been in that era, with the exception of some speckling that's occured since. Hadn't considered a peep, I'll try a 57.

The box of treasures is what makes projects like that possible. I've had that forearm for years. The old band fit the barrel contour perfectly, and everything is as tight as a vault. It's critical on cutting the notch in the barrel that you cut and fit, cut and fit until it's snug but threads right and locks up. I'm happy with that.

Yeah, that gun just screams to be hunted.. good job!

For what it's worth, I like the Redfield 70 on a 99 carbine or short rifle better than the Lyman 57. The Lyman just looks bulky to me in comparison.

Both buttstocks and forearms in the box. There are some new sets wrapped up in the bottom, they don't get out much. ;)

If you get rid of anything, the next thing you know you buy a dadgum rifle needing it.

Well, I checked and the Lyman I have fits factory drilled rifles (scope base holes), so it's regular old irons for this girl.

I'm really glad to hear that John. I think the only thing I killed with that BB was a coyote, but that was self defense he thought I was a dying rabbit and was fixin to eat me.

Yeah, the 100 grain angle is the upside to this rifle. I'm a fan of the Barnes bullets for their penetration. They outperform their size when you need penetration, like in the event of crossing paths with a large bear while deer hunting.

The only thing I shot with it is Paper and a few cans, carried it 11 days out of our 15 day rifle season! we went away for Thanksgiveing a few days! never had a legal deer in front of me, passed a couple of button bucks tho, that I could have shot!

I didn't doubt that. I should have said that having a sight in hand is worth a lot more than shopping for another one. You already have a 57 so why the heck bother looking for anything else? Anyway, that's the way I sees it.

Oh yeah, I'm tracking with you fer sher. But unfortunately my Lyman fits a newer 99 that's pre-drilled for scope bases, not the tang sight holes. That's ok with me.

Watch out. Before you know it the next thing we'll be talking about will be the virtues of Daisy's Red Ryder! I never had one. My Daisy was the model below the Red Ryder. It didn't have the saddle ring or the forearm, but it still spit out BBs as fast as Chuck Conner's cycled is Model 92! After that I moved onto a pump Crossman 760 and became the terror of my folks back yard. Things have changed. I'm pretty sure someone would call the cops if you shot a pellet gun in that yard today.

Lyman 57 with the target turrets is a bad ass sight.

I never had a Red Ryder either. I was a Crossman man, after graduating from my dad's hand-me-down from when he was a kid in the 30's- a gawdawful Daisy single shot, cocked like breaking open a single shot shotgun, loaded by dropping a BB down the barrel, a true muzzle loader. Accuracy was virtually non-existent, muzzle velocity in the realm of 50 fps or so. Barely good enough to hit and sting a kid sister in the butt. But, nigh onto 60 years later it and the Crossman Killer Diller occupy point of pride in the gun cabinet. (I really ought to see if it will still light up my kid sister.)

Feeding that thing set a pattern to follow the rest of my life. My measly allowance went for buying BB's, all of it, every week. Milky Way bars, Cokes, comic books? Nope. BB's, all the way man. (Well there was the occasional pack of Greenie Stickum Caps, and the odd condom or two.) The gun shot best with Winchester's, at first in the 250-count red cardboard tubes and later in the yellow/blue tubes. Honest to god, as a six year old I range tested different brands. (Will it hit an empty bean can at 15 feet or not. Definitely critical for sniping the correct butt cheek when the prey was hiding behind the grape arbor.)

Don't even get me started on .22's, which my parents didn't allow until well after all my buddies had graduated to one. I wonder why.

That's a great shooter with two personalities. Has the great look of the barrel band, but oughta make a great hunting rifle with the faster twist and heavier bullets. Sweet rifle.

Yeah between age 6 & 10, maybe, I probably only had actual possession of the BB guns 2/3 of the time. But Pop made up for it by taking me along on the rat hunting expeditions to the town dump on Sunday afternoons after church.

I remember taking my Crossman 760 up to 15-pumps. I think 12 was the max. A buddy of mine blew out is Benjamin by over pumping it all of the time. I guess on a fundamental level we've always been fascinated with raw velocity.
