Sure does share characteristics with spruce hen

Variations in color across ranges happen all over the place... other things do not vary nearly as much. I gave three specific points where spruce is what fits. Small color variations are not good markers...

Sorry Sitka, but it isn’t only color, but the breast of the bird in question has no mottling on it. It is not a Spruce grouse...

I guess we have different definitions of mottling...

Stage of feather growth has a lot to do with color patterns (mottling), but again, you are relying on color.

I'm going with what I suggested in my post on page one.

A hybrid..................then everyone can be right...............sorta................

'cause I doubt it's a hybrid Dusky/Sooty/Sage/Spruce/Sharptail.

But I have no issue with a hybrid of some kind.

Nope, I am relying on decades of shooting blue grouse...

Good evening to you sir, I trust all is well with you and your ever smiling wife.

With all due respect, are you sure and certain that it couldn't be one of these fellows, who simply dropped by their version of Cabela's and bought some sort of camo duds?

And swim fins of course - that goes without saying.... wink

All the best to you all this fall sir and good luck on your hunts too.

Don't you ever get tired of arguing with everyone on the campfire?

That's a relatively young blue grouse hen. It did look like a spruce hen to me at first, but the motting and tail color on it gave it away.

Hybrid between the spruce and blue has been documented in Idaho, back when ya'll were middle-aged, 1955.

Roosters of just about any species are so randy they'll board anything that looks remotely similar. grin

In Oregon if you see the yellow above eye, on a larger grouse, Don't shoot it. That is all I got out of Oregon's grouse hunting information.

All is great here and hope the same is true for you and your flock, friend Dwayne. Funny, but your clown fowl shot brought both a grin as well as grimace. We have them here but not in huntable numbers. I'd be lying if I said I haven't at times been tempted having some handsome, mature specimens come into our sea duck spreads, but I'd rather just leave them be and hope that their numbers rebound some day. Just seeing them in the wild here is treat enough. I have lusted after them enough to dedicate two trips to the PNW specifically to target them, only to leave without firing a single shot at one. Both trips they were there, but for reasons I'll not get into I never had a chance at one. Looking on the bright side, I have had a couple of generous offers to join a hunt for them where they are abundant, and when a trip's logistics work on both ends will have one for the case yet. Of that I am sure. I am also as sure that when I am holding one in hand it will be that much sweeter of a memory made. Not hardly always, but sometimes having to really work at something and fail a couple times before succeeding makes it that much more special.

Best to you sir and thanks for your words and pic.
