I would sure look hard at buying the 280 that 257heaven has in the classifieds.

I would pick up a Tikka T3 lite stainless in .308 Winchester and call it good. Very practical (and good) advice.
I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

In our area we are limited to what we can hunt with high power rifle. Anything other than a .243, .223 for coyote or a .450 Bushmaster or a 45-70 for deer is over kill or you flat can't use it.

Then STFU. The rest of your statement is superflous bullshit with no real bearing on this discussion other than to massage your own ego. Suckin' on my titties like you wanted me.

If you reload, 358 Winchester in 20" barrel, short action. 200 gr round or protected point for most. With 1/12" twist use 250 to 310 gr for the big stuff. Rusty

After reading all the opinions, I think I'm going to buy two Tikka T3X rifles instead of the Mesa. One in 6.5 Creedmoor and one in 7mm-08. Put the same optics on both and hunt with the one I feel shoots best. I have a 308 in a Tikka T3X already, was going to have it rebored to 358 Win. I Like reading all the opinions, thanks for the feedback.

Not looking to pick a fight here, but can someone explain to me the utility of having a Tikka in a short action. I mean the action length, weight, and usually barrel length is the same. If you’re going to get a .308, might as well make it a 30-06. If you’re going to get it rechambered to .358 Winchester, you might as well make it a .35 Whelen and so on and so forth.

It’s hard to go with just one caliber for me because I like guns and want to try them all! I’ve shot deer and hogs with: .223 Rem- deer and hogs .220 Swift- lots of deer and hogs .25-06 Rem- deer and hogs .270 WSM- hogs 7 Mag- lots of deer and hogs .338 Lapua one deer 45/70 one deer
If I had to pick one caliber from what i’ve used so far, it would be the 7mag. It’s a Remington 700 Rocky Mountain Elk edition that I won in a drawing. For some reason and I cannot explain why, the recoil if extremely tolerable. My brother’s 7 Mag in Model 70 kicks the chit outa me. I’m getting away from the .22 centerfires because to me, they are all short range guns, meaning that the farther the bullet gets out there the less azz it has to get the job done. Today I’m leaving to go hunting and I’ll be carrying my 270 Winchester and 30-30.

Handle a bunch of rifles personally and pick the one that fits you best, including stuff like safety manipulation, magazine type, etc. Then decide on the cartridge from those available in that model. Honestly, I see no need for any of the magnums in the East, even if you include Kentucky elk. Other than that, pick a cartridge and use good bullets, and you should be fine. There's all kinds of debate here on cartridge virtues, but except for very specialized usage, they're all fine, especially if you reload and aren't dependent on Walmart for your ammo. Any of the standard rounds should give you good bore-life too, important I think in one's go-to rifle.
BTW, there are caliber restrictions on those Kentucky and Pennsylvania elk, if those are on your list of possibilities. This ^^^^^^ pretty well sums it up. Pick the rifle that feels best to YOU. Any of the cartridges would work. I finally settled on .270 Win because (as noted above) that is the legal minimum if God ever blesses me with a KY Elk tag... Rem 700 KS LH barreled action chambered .270 Win in a Rimrock stock with Leupold 2.5x8x40 scope.

My ideal would be a lightweight rifle that's accurate, in 7 mm. with enough powder capacity to push heavy bullets at decent velocity, but not "too much" recoil. I'm hoping the 280 AI NULA I just received yesterday will fit the bill. We'll see.

Can't see the logic in 6.5 and 7-08, but you gotta do what you gotta do and eventually one will stand out.

This for me, but Tikka hasn't earned its 270 badge. That's reserved for M70's only!!

Many have mentioned a 7mm-08 as a great all around caliber suitable for anything in the region you hunt. M70 EW, Fieldcraft, Tikka T3 SS....flip a coin. I just put together an all ‘rounder over the last few months only taking advantage of sales and classifieds. Hindsight the 7mm-08 would be preferred, but the .243 was on sale: Tikka T3x .243win SS - Whittaker’s Memorial Day Sale Vortex Razor HD LH 1.5-8x32 - SWFA clearance Talley extra lows - ‘Fire gearstore McM Edge Sako Hunter- ‘Fire classifieds 7lb-3oz A superlite would have been even lighter, but the sporter profile puts more weight over the front (especially since adding the Edge) which I prefer. Waiting on dies and Starline brass to put together a load with 80gr TTSXs.

Tikka 7mm08 or a 270win or 30/06. I think the 7m08 is best light round.
