It's really not that difficult to reach 300. 300 is still "short range". Sight in dead on at 200 and I'd consider a cartridge GTG if you don't have to do more than hold high shoulder at 300. Any cartridge that can do that is basically point-n-shoot from 0 to 250. There are a lot of them.
Something in the .300 Savage class and less ( .30 150 @ 2,500) will reach it with ease. Use a decent bullet like a Barnes mono and you have powder burn ranges covered too. The 30 Remington AR is/was looking good to me. I just wonder how the guns ran.

Guide Guns wear a schit mechanism, with schit stocks and are an exceedingly POOR trade of recoil,to results. Hint.
Congratulations?!?....................

I've a pard, "Frankenwiener" that got chow on by a decent sized black bear when hunting with a 444 Marlin. Thirty some stitched including 17 on his scroat and unit.
He doesn't pack that marlin for bears any more.
The bear did die.

Well, if I had to engage in a donnybrook with a Black Bear that someone shot and wounded that I had to trail up, while I wouldn't worry if all I had was a 7-08, I'd damn well feel a lot more comfortable with my .35 Whelen and a stiff load with either the 225 gr. Barnes TSX or 250 gr. Speer or Hornady bullets. But then, to quote Elmer Keith, "I prefer to let every man scratch his own fleas in whatever manner he chooses. I've taken elk out to 350 Yards with my Whelen and the 225 gr. TSX so I know it'll reach out and touch something. Paul B.

If'n you find yourself in close cover chasin' something that might gnaw on your ankle use the appropriate gun. I like shotguns and buckshot in the swamps. Only ever got blood splatter on my jeans once. If a fella just has to use a rifle, it needs to be a dead nuts reliable repeater. Pumper, lever, auto, it don't matter so long as it is RELIABLE. Ferget about the scope, but I can attest to the fact that a peep with a largish aperture can work, IF the gun fits you like a glove. Ya don't need a ghost ring sight, just something bigger than the average competition aperture. If you don't think you can hit something close and far with such things, take up a job sellin' ladies apparel at Wal-Mart instead. Williams makes a Twilight aperture that will do the trick. .050" hole in the middle. If you think a .45-70 with such contrivances won't reach out 300 yards effectively....well, hold my beer bubba. I like the Highwall, but it ain't much of a close quarters combat piece. Friend of mine that posts here on occasion usta have a Marlin 1895 CB in .45-70. Dayum, it was an awesome shooter. Would sling 500 grain paper patch into little tiny groups it would. Maybe a guide gun could do it, but I got no use for little short girly barrels. Mebbe you could find one of those old Winchester 88's in .308/.358 and have it nickle plated. At least it would look like stainless. Or seriously cote it with something... That's all I got, and I'll let you get back to regular programming now.

I dont know anything about shooting bears but I'm sure enjoying reading about it and all the good ideas. Except for this jackass Big Stick guy. Why is he allowed on here? All he does is insult everyone. He sounds a little nutty.

The bear did die. We had a local hunter here about 10 maybe 15 years ago that shot a fair size Black bear with his 444 Marlin and he got chewed up too.
