I should have put these in a new post.
1895 hard rubber bp. this is on a factory embellished 1895 half octagon.

standard crescent bp. I'm taking these photos out of my files and am not sure which rifle this is on.

screaming Indian bp introduced about 1914 and used until about 1926. A lot of rifles used this bp, not sure which rifle this is. Corrected per Rory's post.

rare trapdoor bp on a highly custom factory rifle belonging to a friend of John Wrights.

Thin hard rubber bp on a 1912 vintage 1899H 22 HP

99H bp, notice the difference between this bp and the 1899 SRC bp. during the time I was writing my book someone tried to sell a 99H bp as a SRC bp. Won't work, the difference in shape requires different stock inletting. This BP is on a 1934 vintage 99H 30-30

This pic shows all the bp's used on the various 99H's. left most, the bp shown above and used on variations V1-1, V1-2, V2-2, and V3-1, 2nd, V2-1 shotgun type bp, 3rd V1-3 shotgun type BP, 4th V3-2 carbine type bp, (these 3 types are unique to the model 99H) and 5th is the V3-3 bp which is shared with the other models. These carbines belong to Rick99 and I used his data to cover the 99H in detail in my book, pages 65 to 71.

This is the standard Savage logo bp used on most models from about 1926 to maybe as late as 1946. This is on a 99G that was produced in 1933.

#4 in the first post is on a 1912 vintage matching number TD short rifle. I am sure I have seen earlier rifles with the screaming Indian logo which Savage adopted in about 1904 or 1905. Is the SR bp a leftover used later, am I mistaken or what? any input would be greatly appreciated. David

Rory, you are probably right. In my last post I mention that the earlier bp appears on a 1913 vintage SR. I jumped to the conclusion that since Savage adopted the screaming eagle image in their advertising about 1904/'05 I assumed the screaming eagle bp came out at the same time. I don't have a rifle with the shotgun type steel bp made between 1904 and 1913 except the SR made in 1913. Thanks for the input. David

Thank you much for posting the pictures and the information. I have always wondered how different Savage's crescent buttplate was from those that were used by Marlin and Winchester. Are they interchangeable? I think I know the answer but I would appreciate the input of an expert. Thanks again.

S99VG, not knowing much about early Winchester and Marlins I can't answer that question. But since Marlin produced the 1895 maybe they used a Marlin crescent bp which Savage carried over into the Savage produced rifles.

They continued using the smooth buttplate right up to the 250-3000 as far as we've been able to tell. Here's an angled picture of a 1912 1899A SR buttplate. Don't have a better picture yet, but you can see it wasn't ridged.

I've noticed you can get reproduction crescent buttplates for Marlin and Winchester. If the three makes did interchange, then this could help out guys looking for crescent buttlpates that went missing from their 95s and early 99s. Thanks again!

I didn't mention in this post that I was only posting pre-WWII buttplates. Except for the last few the bp's are photos from my files. I'll need to take a lot of photos to cover the subject up to the end. No time in the schedule now.
Savage 5516, the PE and DL also used that bp. I think I've seen an early 1970's F with it also. David

I've seen Fs from as early as 1963 with the aluminum butt plate. I guess it got whatever was handy at the moment.

Sorry I thought you were posting all 99 buttplates.

Great post Dave. Regarding the SRC , Saddle Ring Carbine plate , the handle you hear for the H' that has no saddle ring nor cheeks on the buttstock and with the abbreviated butt plate here is The Eastern Carbine.,since it is escencialy ,otherwise .the continuation of the SRC. The barrel would be lighter too.

Malcolm, I'm a big fan of both the SRC and the 99H. Haven't killed anything with a 99H yet but someday.

No I never kill anything Dave , guess I wouldn't make the club but it just bothers me. I sure do like the guns though , though I know what there 're for. As a matter of fact a friend of mine had an H for sale at the last gun show I was at , maybe he still has it.
