Thanks for the multiple corrections on the "only bomber" thing.
There was a B-36 on static display at Chanute AFB in Illinois. It was purely a "school" base where they taught missile maintenance, among many other specialities. I wonder what became of the B-36 when they closed the place.

IIRC, there was also a B-36 on static display at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, across the fence from Lackland. Since they have consolidated everything, and I haven't been back there in years, I don't know if it is still there.

Joined the Army Air Corps in 1941. As a licensed commercial pilot he hoped to get into flight training for the Army but... he was too old at age 37. A smart guy, he found the there was no age limit for glider pilots and with that work around, he got his wings. With those he applied for and was put into flight training. By late 1943 he was commander of a B-24 squadron in England.
