So I'm debating on switching out my .243 for a 6mm wildcat or a 22-250ai

So far I'm thinking...

6mm-06 (or ai)
6xc (6mm-250)
22-250 ai

More than likely be in a single shot Encore barrel

Opinions?

Wildcat ? I don't need no stinking wildcat. The standard 6mm Remingtons I have work just fine.

I like my 6MM AI with 1-13 1/2 twist and 70 gr just over 4080 fps and 55 gr over 4350 fps.

The Coyotes dont like it much.

I'm partial to the 6x47L

You can reach Amber your 243 into a 6mm 284. I have two. They are effective.

What praytell will it be used for? That'll determine whether a recommendation for a mild pussycat accurate bench gun or a sizzling hottie for long range hunting/varminting is called for.

I have a Rem 700 custom in 240 weatherby that is a coyotes nightmare. Other than expensive brass, it’s a great gun and cartridge.

accurate bench shooting mostly. I'm not a speed junkie, just like to shoot for accuracy.

Accurate bench shooting, not a speed junkie, Encore barrel so no feeding issues ---> Forget wildcat and go 6mm PPC or 6mm BR.

In that case I nominate 6x47 (the old one), or for a little more oomph, 6x47 Lapua or 6mm BR.

That's my thought as well. A third option that's pretty similar to the 6mm PPC is the 6mm Grendel variants (243 LBC, 6mm AR, etc); those are real similar to the 6 PPC except the shoulder is blown forward just a little (matches a standard Grendel shoulder), no turn necks, and they are usually throated for heavier high-b.c. bullets.

If your not looking for speed a 6MM BRX is a very good round and wins lots of F class shoots.

22 Creed, great brass, no fire forming

I have been shooting the 22/250 AI for many years, love the case, super accuracy.

If you are a light bullet man for shortish range coyote hunting, then a 6 Creed, very short freebore, 55g Nosler would be way over 4000 fps with bug hole accuracy.

If you want to do it all with one bullet, the 105g Berger Hunting vld, the 6 XC, 6x47 lapua, are idiot proof in tuning a super accurate, fast load, tiny, tiny groups that carry the freight way out there. It is a real shame they quit making the 105g A max.

In 6mm I have to say I am really happy with my chunk, Criterion Remage, 75 dollar B&C plywood varmint stock, Timney trigger, SWFA 10X SS..........6x47L

The photo was after I screwed it together with ~28" barrel, it's now 20" and threaded.

I was planning to get completely out of the Lapua after selling the evil twins but no way am I jacking with this one, it's accurate, consistent and fun to shoot!

Single pass with 6.5x47 through Forstner 6x47L dies.

Load is 105 Amax over H4350 and CCI BR primers, 10-shot groups at 100 below.

RDW nice choice and I really like the bench box. Did you make it?

I am still wringing out a 6AI but it is primarily for hunting and 95-115 grain bullets. For targets shooting anything in the 6BR-6XC range would be good. A 6 Creedmoor or 6x47L would probably be my picks.

Yeah I have a straight-up 6-250 (not an Int’l or XC) I bought here and absolutely love it.

If I’d have built it myself I’d have twisted it faster than the 10” Sako it has.

I’ve killed a bunch of stuff with this rifle, and my young boys and other new shooters have learned to shoot with it.

The muzzle blast is significantly less than the .243, and this is a very easy wildcat... I just run .22-250 cases through a 6mm neck sizer & VIOLA!

+1

I got much the same with a Shilen 14T, zero freebore reamer, 70g Noslers at 4150 and 55's Noslers at 4400.

I had another 10T chambered with the same reamer, 70's accuracy node was at 3980 fps.

both barrels were 26" long.

I used Win 760 in both guns and primers made a big difference in the group size and SD.

This size case is better in a long action or with a Rem short action that has a Wyatt's mag box. You can get longer length out of some detachable mag boxes I recently became aware of.

IN another rifle, 14T Pac Nor, I shot the 60g Sierra at 4400, rock chucks splattered on rocks like paint balls.

These kinds of speeds are hard to imagine in just how fast a bullet gets there, and how humanely it kills so fast.

In the 243 AI, with the same zero freebore configuration, The 70g Noslers in 26" barrels were in the 3800 fps area, and a tad more with WLRM primers with "Win 760.

I shot a Coyote last weekend at 423 yds with my 22-6MM AI shooting 55 gr Sierra Blitz kings. When I rocked back into the scope he was down. I said to myself damn that was fast. I don't know what rifle I like the most. I have a 22-6MM AI with a 27 inch Bartlein barrel with a 1 - 14 twist. And a 6MM AI with a 27 inch Brux barrel with a 1 - 13 1/2 twist.

The 22-6mm AI will shoot .500 groups with 50 to 65 gr all day.

The 6mm AI will shoot .500 groups with 55 to 70 all day.

I also had a 6mm BRX built with a Krieger 1 - 8 twist that will shoot the Sierra 107 gr HPBT matchking in very tiny groups. Its a lauber for sure, but is scary accurate.

The 6mm-06 is a laser but is about as overbore as you'd want in a 6mm. Barrel life being somewhat of a concern depending on how often you will pull the trigger. Your 243 Win is a good one just the way it is but if you are set on changing, you could easily go 243 AI and see some significant improvement. Starting over completely and looking for a fast twist I would opt for the 6mm Creedmoor.

If you decide on the 6mm-284 you can expect right around 1000 rounds and it will be finished. I only shot two or three shots at a time and cooled it with CO2. Got some fantastic accuracy with a heavy target platform using a Bartlein 5R 1in 7.5 twist with necked down 6.5-284 lapua brass and 105 Bergers. I switched to a 6 BR in that heavy platform which will give me slightly better accuracy and last a LONG time.

IMO the 6mm-284 works best in a sporter rifle. I figured out how to do it on the cheap. I still have the reamer and now rechamber Rem 243 takeoffs. The twist won't work with the heavy target bullets but a 55 gr Nosler BT will absolutely vaporize a small rodent. When the barrel is cooked no biggie I chuck up another takeoff in my lathe and do it again.

FYI that rem barrel is 23 3/4" long (removed bolt recess for Ruger action) It also shoots a 95 gr Berger classic hunter at 3465 fps very accurately with RL-17 too.

What were the "odds" of your knife wielding "abilities",being commensurate with your rifle "knowledge"?!? Hint. LAUGHING!

Too bad an itty-bitty 22 Speedmire with .545BC 88's,simply crushes a 6AI.

Oooopsie!

I've more than a few of everything and your Insecurities are very WELL founded. Hint. Congratulations?!?

It’s hard to keep up with your whinnying and bitching.... 22 kreedmire, doubles of numerous sets of dies, never killing shiit with a 6ai etc.... let’s get back to this “crushing “ you speak of, I’ve obviously “crushed” more that most with the 6ai... hint

Have built a goodly sized herd of .284 Win based rifles on S/A Big green Donors and nary a feed/function issue...but only in 6-284,25-284 and 284(multiple rifles in each chambering).

Can only speak to ADL,BDL and DBM.

I don't feel compelled to apologize, for consuming your EVERY thought and "move",as you set on the sidelines Whining aloud. Hint. Congratulations?!?

Just zero'd the reserve Garrow, with the Reupold Wrong Wrange 30mm M1 4.5-14x. Obviously,it can't hang with the MQ version of same.

Hint.

Hmmmmmm...it seems to me that a 22" 8" 224 Grendel and the 88 ELD's .545 BC at 3250fps,easily trumps the Fredrica One Trick Pony. Now what were the fhuqking "odds"?!? Hint. Congratulations?!?

Pardon my shooting it all and then some.

Bless your hearts for TRYING.

Use your Imagination and Pretend,to cite the "particulars" of which bullet and at which speed, your One Hit Wonder "operates" at. Then correlate same,to your verson of "knowledge","experience" and "results".

Wonders will always amaze at how a Gerbil can lift a rifle and puzzle its operations to slay a dink in the dark then scurry away inside your speed ball only to return in the light of day to claim your winning ticket. A poached dink deer. Classic Gerbil moves on the Rez 😎

Poacher Gerbils gotta eat, too

Does Big Stink Poach? Like shoot deer after dark? Is he the one the Alaska State Troopers track down at night only they can't find him cuz they have their spotlights level with the door height?

I’m not puzzled over the common or ordinary tasks at hand...You become dilated at night so your small Gerbil eyes can see the illumination of your spotlight on your wizzum with trembling hands. So scared you will miss the dink in the dark. Poachers have problems too. 😎

Jud, Gerbil Boy gets confused easily when looking at men. Heard about a picture of him swaggering around in his baby sized whittie-titties to impress some dudes...Only heard about it. You seen that picture? Gerbils need love too 😎

Bright and Light. Any thing above a 2A battery and his arms start trembling from the weight...The fear of recoil is strong in him too. Ala, shooting a lot of 22 Rimfires. Light weight, no recoil...Good poaching rig for the Gerbil 😎
