Was a little surprised to see the Chrony reading 2750-2775 fps while shooting my CZ 457 17HMR over the weekend. Was shooting Hornady V-Max 17gr ammo. Also shot my centerfire rifle and speeds were as expected so I don't think it was chronograph error. Curious if it's a hot lot of ammo, the 24" barrel on this rifle or if 200+ fps over the label on the box is common?

It's not uncommon for 17HMR to post higher velocity than stated on the box. Unfortunately it's also not uncommon to see high S.D. (as well as extreme spread) with 17HMR ammo.

I did notice a fair amount of velocity variation - High just over 2800 low 2740, but the majority were inside the 2750-2775 range. I can imagine with that little case a tiny variation in powder volume would make a difference.

Guessing those sculls and crossbones probably added at least 100fps.

stick have ya ever cut a hummer tube to 16.5"? how does the velo compare to your 18"ers?? i figured cutting my cz hummer barrel to 16.5" would get me a 17mach2 with more avaliable ammo... thanks, Big Ed

18" is as short as I've rolled...but chopping spouts don't aspook me.
It'll crush a Mach2 yet...................

I got 2577 fps with Hornady 17 gr., 2666 with CCI A17, and 2450 with CCI 20 gr FMJ., all out of a Ruger American Rimfire.

I averaged 2777 for 3 rounds, Marlin 917V. That was at 4600' and about 95 degrees.

2775 seems to be about average for me also. 4000' and 40-50 degrees. Need to check it on a hot day.

When all the fuss started about the 17 HMR, picked up a pencil barreled Savage 93 to see what was up. First impression, was that it was more accurate at 100 yards than I expected it to be, as putting five shots inside an inch wasn't much of a challenge, using a Harris and a rear bag from the bench.
Then one day an old buddy was at the range with his chronograph set up, so we sent five through the screens. He was busy looking thru his spotting scope and noting that they were well within 3/4's of an inch. Then we got to looking at the readouts. Forget now what it said on the Hornady box, but they were all 25 to 50 FPS faster than the advertised velocity. He asked when was the last time I'd seen a new round that exceeded its advertised performance. Said probably never?
Wasn't much of a woodchuck round in my opinion, so I sold it to someone that wanted it for his son, along with the leftover Hornady ammo. Have part of a box of Remington Vmax ammo, but it doesn't list the speed on the label, like the Hornady stuff did.
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.
