No, vegetarianism is not a religious thing. There is no prohibition in the SDA church against eating meat.

I was born as a third generation SDA. My sisters and cousins attended SDA boarding secondary school.
I attended church each Sabbath for the first twentyfive years of my life, took all the home Bible studies, and well learned all the lesson taught by the SDA church. My wife and I were married in an SDA church by an SDA Pastor. And that is the last time I have been inside the Church.

Back in the 1800s there was a little lady named Ellen G White who did revivals for the SDA church. She wrote volumes and volumes of material which is much of the foundation of the SDA church. She was/is widely recognized as a "True Prophet" among the SDA Congregation.

Sister White did teach vegetarianism for its health benefits. But there is no religious proscription against the eating of meat. Many SDA people adopt the practice of vegetarianism as a personal choice.

Actually such belief in the health benefits of the vegetarian diet was common during this time period. On a related note, Dr. Kellog invented "Corn Flakes" in an effort to get people away from their traditional daily breakfast of pork and eggs.

The SDA church strongly adheres to the laws of the old testament including 7'th day Sabbath and the prohibitions against "unclean meats" including pork, horse, camel, shellfish, catfish, birds of prey, etc, etc. (Just like Muslims and Jews)

On the other hand, smoking, drinking, and fornication will get your butt kicked out of the church quickly.
