I've always wondered why no one uses a cantilever mount on a break barrel.
Seems like having a scout scope mounted to the barrel block would be the best way to put glass on a Springer.
All the magnification & single focal plane advantages of a scope, and immune to any lack of precision/variance relating to the lockup.

Now that I have an old Slavia with no easy way to mount a scope on the main tube I think I'd like to try it.
I can replace the rear sight (it just sits in a crosswise dovetail) with a homemade mount, but I don't know that anyone makes a scope that will take the double recoil.

Does anyone know of one?
I'm thinking a Center Point might be made that way. Or a Hawke.
Other than that I really don't have a guess.

Thanks in advance

I haven't looked for a forward Scout Scope with the recoil support for double recoil on a springer. Looks like you will have to do research. But it was never easier than today with the interwebs. Rusty

Allegedly all Burris scopes will take airgun recoil. And if it doesn’t, they’ll replace it if it breaks.

Sounds like a good idea - having a "scout scope" type mount on a break barrel. Might look at giving that a try myself. I put an Optima 3x9 on my Hatsan 30 caliber break-barrel. The gun has a "good" receiver mount, came with a padded "stop" for the double recoil, and the scope is marketed by Hatsan as an air rifle optic. Haven't been able to shoot it a lot yet, but so far it seems to be doing good, and I am pleased with it.

I just read the same thing about Leupold, which I didn't know. Interesting...
Still, I don't want to spend that kind of money (at least not today) on a very basic plinker.

However, I could see myself picking up a strong modern .22 gas piston rifle (typically no sights or junk sights) and setting it up with good glass in a scout mount.
On my centerfire scout i use the glass as a magnified iron sight, and my guess is that's all it was ever meant to be. That should work very well on any airgun, with the double advantage of keeping the sight to bore axis relationship perfect on break barrels.

Hawke advertises some scopes they claim are air gun tolerant.

Bought a 3-9 from a member here and have it on a Beeman R9. So far it's holding up, but I only have a hundred or so rounds through it.

A barrel mount does sound like a good idea.

I have a Burris Scout 2.75 that's not doing anything at present. PM me if interested.

It seems that mounting a scope ahead of the hinge would be a more accurate way of mounting a scope.........but I have never had an issue mounting them back on the receiver. Most quality springers are one hole accurate at 10 yards and easily 1/2" at 25 yards - what more is there to be had? I think conventional mounting is fine and typically provides a larger field of view through the optic. I think we are fixing something that ain't broke here. But if you want to try it, I have a couple handgun scopes I would sell cheap if you would like to experiment let me know.
