I got a Browning 7mm-08 this year and really like it. I shot a doe at 165 yards, a bobcat and a coyote at 120 yards. It probably kicks a little more than a .243 but still not bad at all and you don't even notice it when you are shooting at something. My brother and sister in law bothhave .243s. She shot a buck that weighed 190 lbs and itran about 75 yards. I don't think it was a pass through shot but got the job done. My brother has killed a lot of deer with his. I would go with the 7mm-08 just because it shots a bigger bullet and it will do anything the .243 will do and some. I may be wrong but I think you could even take an Elk with a 7mm-08.

These answers ... together. 2.5-8X36 Leupold VX-3i w/ B&C. I believe now you have to go to the custom shop to get that combination though it used to be available over the counter. Second choice would be the same setup but in a 3.5-10X40.

My Tikka 7mm-08s have VX2 Leupolds on them, both CDS. One is a 4-12, the other is a 3-9. I practice out to 600 yards.

3.5-10x on my 700:

[Linked Image]

The 2.5-8x is 1.2 ounces lighter, so I *COULD* be under 7 pounds but....frankly it's perfect as-is. I tend to hunt more open areas though, and since I'm heading to Alberta this fall I figure the 10x will likely be highly useful.

Great scope! That Kahles is exactly what I have on my 7mm-08 Model 7.

I think Doug had a Meopta 3-9x40 on sale for around $300, would be a good place to start.

I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 on my 7x57 Featherweight. A Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36 or 3.5-10x40 would also work.

Fotis,

When I saw the headline, my immediate thought was Weaver 6x38, which is what I have on my own lightweight 7-08, a tang-safety Ruger 77 Ultralight that was rebarreled with a #1 contour Douglas. But have only killed several dozen big game animals with fixed 6's at ranges from 25 to 500 yards, so am still a little unsure if they will work.

My variable choice would be one of the Burris 3-9x's several have already mentioned, either the FFII or E1, Both weigh 13 ounces and work very well.

another 2.5-10 vote here. If its a hunting rifle, you want the wide FOV of 2 power but the 10 power for them longer shots or punching paper at a distance is worth it.
here is a close out on tract 2.5-10 https://www.tractoptics.com/products/riflescopes/tekoa-2.5-10x42-t-plex

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

The scopes come with holdover information for lots of different calibers and it won't take too long to get it keyed to your personal loads.

That's also the one I suggest, since the OP is looking for a good "set and forget" hunting rifle scope. The ballistic plex reticle is also a good way to go and the scope weighs in at less than a pound (like JB said, 13 OZ'S or so). Here's how it would look:

Another great combination for looks is the Leupold 2.5-8x36:
[Linked Image]

This was an old Vari-x III 2.5-8x36, that I had on my 7mm08 featherweight, but didn't like the friction adjustments. I guess if you are not twisting turrets and you can trust Leupold, this would be a good scope to find as well.... The scope shown in the picture would hold zero, but was a little wonky when adjusting. It's not the only Leupold that I've seen that way either...

I did prefer Zeiss Conquests, but they have been updated to 30 mm tubes only. If I couldn't find a new HD5 Conquest still out there with 1" tube, I would buy a Meopta Meopro with their BDC reticle.

Fotis: I bought a really cool Remington Model 700 Mountain Rifle in 7m/m08 a few years ago and have been pretty happy with the Leupold 3x9 variable I have on it.
I got a screaming deal on that used Leupold 3x9 otherwise my plans were to find a Leupold 4x12 variable for it.
That 4x12 Leupold would serve you much better out "Antelope way" - I have several Leupold 4x12's on Big Game and Varmint Rifles already and they have served me very well for a very long time now.
When I do find a good deal on a used 4x12 Leupold (with A/O!) I will switch out the 3x9. The 7m/m08 can be aided by lots of scope power in big sky type country.
Hope what ever you choose (or have chosen!) works out for you.
Love the 7m/m08.

I recently put a Meopta MeoPro 4.5-14x44 on my T/C Icon .308 and I couldn't be happier. My rifle has always shot lights out and the 44mm obj. provides a great FOV without adding additional weight and lets me use a med height ring. This scope will do all you want it to and for a reasonable price. You can even get a Custom Turret made if you are hooked on only using one load. I have 2 Custom Turrets and they make dialing in longrange shots quick and easy. I know there are some 24hour. supporters who sell the MeoPro so give them a ring and I bet they can save you some $. Drop me a note if you need help finding one of these vendors.

For woods hunting with a 2-7x32, 4x is likely the most magnification needed, and has a huge 8mm exit pupil set at 4x. The eye pupil can only open to 5mm at best, so the extra light gathering of a 40mm objective lens is wasted. Why haul any more scope than needed?

Like many stats, that 5mm max pupil opening is an average. There are people whose pupils can open further.

Large Pupils and Lasik

Edit to add: See table below. 5mm is about average for eyes in their 70's but still individuals significantly above in that age group.

I think Doug’s first suggestion of the z3 is on the money. I have a 3-10 brh on a hells canyon speed in 7-08. That scope is as easy as it gets, and the balance of this setup is incredible.
