This morning I removed the scope and to my surprise it is stamped "Savage 1899 Model". Does this change things?

The name change from 1899 to 99 was mostly a marketing change. They assigned model letters and called them 99’s in the catalogs and ads.
But up to 1927 or so they kept stamping MODEL 1899 on them.
For clarity and convenience sake, we stick with the 99 names. But physically there was no changes to the guns from the late 1899’s.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com
