My philosophy and I'm not saying it's any kind of golden rule or correct for anybody else is......The 6.5 covers most everything and what it doesn't cover a 338/06 or 35 whelen makes more sense with 200+ grain bullets! Didn't mean to completely derail the thread but it WAS starting to fizzle and sometimes a controversial statement can be good for several more pages 😁 Not to mention it would be unfair to the 338/06 and 35 Whelen crowd to not get an honorable mention since they are based on an 06 case! Is that close enouph??? 😃

Don't forget the 350 Legend as a sidebar when you talk about 35 bores.

I think that the Legend is pretty limited in its range.

Its still legendary. I woulda picked 350 Chevy.

If your into lightweight rifles the .308 is a better choice due to the shorter action.

I really love my .30-06s but the .308 is a great cartridge. For really big North American game I’ll take my .30-06.

You can download a 30-06 to be a 308,
You cannot upload a 308 to be a 30-06!

30-06 is the most versatile cartridge ever

I'm still trying to figure out how the OP has hung around the "Fire" for 1,041 posts, and doesn't know the answer.

In all fairness to the OP, his question was a simple "which do you prefer", but of course it got turned into a which is better. Par for the course.

And you can tell the difference?

There's a 30-06 in every 300 WSM. There's a 300 WSM in every 300 Weatherby. There's a 300 Weatherby in every 30-378. So why not follow this "logic" and all use a 30-378?

That's been my point forever.

Diminishing Returns.

There's a point where you don't achieve much or anymore than using ?something? less.

Jerry

ps: that's not the case with 308 --> 30-06. IMO

What's your experience on game with each to arrive at that conclusion?

I have both.

The 308 is a Rem 600 which is too light for full house 309's, so I have it loaded down to about 243 power levels. Sweet little shooter and darned accurate. Great for Whitetails within my crappy eyesight range.

The 30-06 is awesome in every way. Works well, kills well.

You can't wrong with either one unless you are after really bigger nastier game that demands the margainal added punch the -06 can deliver with heavier bulllets.

It doesn't take Einstein to figure that one.

The 06 can push 180s and 200s FASTER ---> Flatter --> Farther than the 308. It's NOT a matter of FPE even for Elk. It's trajectory.

In the OP, Dr Death said, " which do you prefer?". That's why.

Really? And the 300 win mag will push them a lot faster than an 06! In fact there is a much bigger difference between the 06 and 300 win mag than the 308 and 30/06. Just because you say so doesn't make it so and even Einstein can figure that out 😁

Yes, and we know how this thread was going to turn out. I'd like to ask guys like Phil Shoemaker what he prefers for big bear hunting. Im pretty sure hed say the old 06 loaded with heavies. Try stuffing a 220 gr partition in a 308 and get back to me. Theres a reason a lot of us prefer the 30-06.
