Years ago, when I was shooting Highpower Rifle, I did a big order for reloading supplies from Champions Choice in Tennessee. I figured I'd order over the phone (this was mid 90s) and pick it up when I visited my brother in Nashville in a week. That way, I'd save on shipping fees. I got there and they nailed me for sales tax, which ended up being more than shipping charges would've been.
A lot of states are now charging sales tax from internet sales. It has something to do with a court case out of S. Dakota ( If I remember right). According to the people I have emailed about it they say they do not have any choice in the matter.
I think this goes back to a Supreme Court decision allow states to collect online sales tax.
AL started doing it in (I think) 2018. I remember the first order I made after it passed was through an online retailer....but I called to place the order because when I was trying to do it online it kept adding tax and I knew they didn't have a presence in AL. When I called they said they were sorry but that AL now had an online tax.
Here's what I found on how the new sales tax income is "used" in AL:

..basically no idea how the state (or counties or municipalities) will use it...just how it's divided up.

In a 5-4 decision, the Court ruled in favor of South Dakota and overruled Quill Corp. v. North Dakota and National Bellas Hess, Inc. v. Department of Revenue of Ill. The Court concluded that “the physical presence rule of Quill is unsound and incorrect.” This is a big deal, since Quill had been the law of the land since 1992 regarding nexus for remote sellers and National Bellas Hess since 1967!
Writing for the majority, Justice Kennedy didn’t mince words as he delivered the opinion of the Court. In the opinion, Justice Kennedy broke down why “Quill is flawed on its own terms.” He wrote, “First, the physical presence rule is not a necessary interpretation of Complete Auto’s nexus requirement.” He continued, “Second, Quill creates rather than resolves market distortions” and “Third, Quill imposes the sort of arbitrary, formalistic distinction that the Court’s modern Commerce Clause precedents disavow in favor of ‘a sensitive, case-by-case analysis of purposes and effects.’”
The Court concluded that “…a business need not have a physical presence in a State to satisfy the demands of due process.”

The accounting part of collecting and paying the appropriate percentage of mandatory state sales tax due to states with retail sales tax added a good deal of extra workload, manpower, expense and record keeping for businesses that sell online and to out of state customers via direct sales by salesmen, too.

Fully aware of it being done last year at fed level It was up to an individual state to do so or not.

That no state income tax isn't such a great deal when the state sales tax rate is double the surrounding states. We haul everything we can think of down from VA when we come down where the rate is nearly 1/2
