Athlon Midas is on par with Vortex Viper HD, and will run circles around any vortex diamondback. Yes, but at twice the price of what the OP was asking for. They're $230.

I'd lean 42mm if low(er) light capability is compulsory - particularly in this price range.
Seems the Meopta Optika 8x42 was built to compete at the precise level you're looking.
Based only on experience with other Meopta products – and feedback from others whose opinions I value, Meopta seems to always outperform the given price point it resides.
I’m tickled with my 8x42 Meopta Optikas.

I have a set of Steiner 7x50 Marine binoculars that I use more than others. They are a bit bulky but the view is excellent.
I also use a smaller set of Nikon Monarchs in 10x42 that are clear and crisp for longer range viewing.
It's official. I missed the selfie deadline so I'm Maser's sock puppet because rene and the Polish half of the fubar twins have decided that I am.

Followed this thread for some time now.Just purchased Bushnell legend ultra HD M-series 10X42 series for $199.Not a optics snob but I think they will help these old eyes for $$ spent.

Thanks Kingston I think that makes the point as well as anything could. I used to think like SB but tried some compact 7.5xs one time and it made a believer of me. Great tips here fellas I marked those Athalons. I have a very nice pair of Vortex 8x42mm but they’re huge and bulky for sitting in a deer stand in tight cover; great for sitting on a western hillside with a tripod.
