You can hear bullets, but not the super coming at you. I doubt even subs coming at you. I would suspect we only hear rounds that have passed by us.
You can surely hear arrows in flight too. Causes animals to duck like crazy as the arrow is coming. Way slower than speed of sound. Makes archery tough at times knowing the animal can get out of the way of the arrow before it arrives. Yeah, I've had a few bucks "jump the string" after the release.

Had a buddy had a buck do that.. but it was a dumber 10 point in a way. Instead of scooting off, he turned a 180 and got hit on the WRONG side entry wise and too far back. Took me a lot of (fun to me) hours of tracking to get that 10 recovered for him. Literally took a whole day to find the deer. Of course once we knew guts were involved plus the liver we laid off during the middle of the day to let him bleed out. After jumping him one time when he got up, looked at us, and walked off
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

Me too back in my recurve days. Never had it happen with a fast compound though.

Used to see the muzzle flash before I heard them. Some days mebbe even cussed before I heard them. Sometimes I never heard them 'cause the gunners were shooting back already. I wonder if the dinks heard ours? Well, not really.... Tell it brother! See flashes, hear whizzes, shoot a bunch just below the flashes and not hear much else for a while except return fire. Hint, try not to prone out next to the M-60 gunner. Ren, the sound created by incoming mortars will make you believe in random chance...and loosen your sphincter a little. I was always grateful that the NVA didn't fly in the south. mike r

Old guy we knew claimed a deer kicked his cedar arrow it was so slow! Sounds like the old guy needed to close the distance! Jumping the string, is an excuse used by how hunters that missed. Usually because they didn't get close enough!

The bullet will be past you by the time the sound reaches you.
except that the sound of a sub-sonic projectile cutting through the air will reach you before the projectile does. if a project is at about 550 fps, sound is about 0.3 seconds ahead of the projectile. and stabilized subsonics will sound different to unstabilized. One should also remember that the human body[brain] can do seemingly weird things in stressful situations like 'auditory exclusion'...so even sound waves your ears are collecting of close gunfire [when processed by the auditory cortex] can be dulled/muffled or completely muted...yet at other stressful times you can have heightened perceptibility , where even the slightest sound can be heard , which in more normal circumstances you may not perceive, for a variety of reasons. When the brain has to multitask in situations where high demands are placed on the sensory perceptions, the visual cortex and audible cortex have to share resources and at times take turns processing information. In situations of High-stress visual stimulation, the processing of audible information may be much reduced. The brain deciding what sensory perceptions should be prioritised can be a double-edged sword, At times it can work very much in your favor by giving priority to the correct senses , at other times it could be shutting down the sensory ability that should be given higher priority. Studies have shown that a high heart rate simply due to physical activity and no threat to life situation, can reduce ones hearing, since the rate of blood flow through the eardrums results in a 'noise cancelling' effect. Now consider how much ones hearing pereceptibilty may suffer, when you are combining a high heart rate , with the brain also giving higher priority to the visual cortex.
-Bulletproof and Waterproof don't mean Idiotproof.
