Great pictures everyone! Hope to see this bull come September ..with a little better luck this time.General archery tag. A bull I had a few encounters with but couldn’t get in range. I was fortunate enough to be there when a good friend got him with a rifle last fall. Photogenic Big mainframe 5

124, it was.
I'd take it over the Gila in NM, the breaks in MT and anywhere in AZ or UT. There might be a select few southern Idaho elk hunts I'd take instead, but even that would be a maybe, and it would only be for the lesser chance of busted up antlers. Sure ruin the draw odds! 😉. Passing up any unit in UT and AZ for that tag is crazy talk though!

I've been sort of side-tracked from getting serious about elk the last couple years, hunting sheep, big pronghorn, and deer as well as helping out my 2 nephews who are becoming very good hunters. Last season, shot 3 elk for the freezer here in Wyoming last season, all cows. Helped my nephew with a cow, an old friend, and 5 of my buddies from ND, ID, and MT all get elk as well. Growing up in Montana elk were for eating, and I shot the first legal bulls I could find. Its funny digging up these old pictures. Shot them by the trailer load sometimes, opening day, 1985: Wayyy back in the day: One of the crappiest places I ever killed an elk in Montana, archery opener: Rifle opener: First six point I ever killed:

Last year it was legal to kill spikes in the place my family has hunted since the 1940's in Montana. Ruined a good day of deer hunting, but velvet spike bulls are about as good on the table as it gets: Last day MT bull some years back: Last day I could hunt the first time I drew the breaks, passed a ton of better bulls: Another breaks bull: Same hunt, found this bull while glassing for deer. A guy from Billings drove by and asked if I'd seen any bulls. Took him back let him look at it through my spotting scope. He liked the bull so I planned the stalk, and went with him. His best bull ever, haven't heard from the guy since, but was glad to help him out. He was an older guy and was about in tears he was so happy.

Some more Montana bulls: Watched my Dad shoot this one while we were hunting deer, elk ruined another good day of deer hunting: Another one while hunting deer, and probably the last bull I'll shoot in Montana. Hate feeling like I'm killing the last bull in the drainage I hunt due to Montana's mismanagement of public land elk. General Montana bull, my best from Montana: Same bull:

Some nicer bulls from Wyoming. Best archery elk, and best elk ever: Same bull: Another Wyoming bull: Next day my wife shot this one, her first elk: A few years later, same area, my wifes second bull: When I left the truck it was -29 degrees, but no wind in Wyoming makes it not so bad, in particular when old bulls are bedded in the sun:

Helped a good friend from Wisconsin with this bull, miserable, windy SOB that day...but it payed off: I've drawn 4 rifle bull tags in Arizona, hunted with 3 donated one to Arizona hunt of a lifetime. The 3 I hunted:

Was caught and tagged at the Bondurant feed grounds, for WGFD's normal data collection reasons.
I shot that spike and a 4x5 the next year about 1/2 mile away, that also had that ear tag.

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
