I'm looking at buying a European build rifle. It has a monte-carlo comb but also has the dropping pig's back style stock. Is this acceptable if I am going to put a scope on the rifle?

Have a CZ 550 FS in 9.3x62 with the hogs back stock. No problems shooting it, it's actually a very accurate rifle.

The Hog Back style stock serves the same purpose as a Monte Carlo style stock, it gives a more natural shoulder position but holds the cheek weld to establish good contact with the shooter, I find them quite comfortable and easy to shoulder providing a natural point of aim unlike most Classic style stocks.

I thought the purpose was to lower the eye to align it with the iron sights. IOW, the Europeans like them because they use irons sights a lot more than Americans. I was afraid that having a low placement like that might cause me to raise my cheek off the stock in order to see through my scope.

There's a Bavarian stock on my CZ 527. It looks funny to Americans, but I like shooting it just fine.

Like any stock design, it depends on the particular stock's dimensions and how well it fits you. I have one with a hog's back stock at the moment which fits me well. I have a couple of other Euro rifles with low combs, but with less curve, and they do me fine too, but I'm used to holding my head upright, not dropping it onto the comb, and having whatever part of my face meets the comb serve as "cheek weld". As long as the butt meets my shoulder and the scope ends up in front of my eye I'm good to go, even if it is actually more my jaw than my cheek in contact with the comb.

I have used others with hog's back stocks which did okay too, but some are bloody awful. One I remember without fondness had a hog's back comb which was far too narrow, and a narrow steel buttplate, and it knocked me around more than it should.

if you are shooting a boomer off the bench the muzzle flip is really bad with these stocks.

My 458 has a european style stock and I find it very comfortable. A friend after shooting my rifle replaced his "American" style stock on his 416 Rigby and has been much happier. Bottom line is the internet cannot predict what will fit you.
