We will never know the total number of cases unless every person is tested. I don't see that happening.

Confirmed cases are probably way lower than total cases. It seems many cases are so mild they go un-noticed, or just very mild symptoms.

Although we are going to stack up some bodies, I believe it is a safe bet that the actual mortality is far lower than 1.78%

1.78% of our USA population would be about 5.8 million. Hopefully it will not be anywhere near that bad.

The numbers are compared at the incorrect period in time. Death typically comes weeks into illness. When you're counting those newly ill, that's a starting number. When discussing the dead that's an ending number. Persons who recovered are an ending number. Those numbers, illness onset and illness conclusion, are separated in time. This is especially true where the increase of the disease in the population is nonlinear. When we get a total of confirmed cases, that doesn't tell us when the illness began or whether the illness has concluded.

On March 16, 2020, there were approximately 4500 confirmed cases in the US. Based on the medical communities observations, most of those cases from two weeks ago are winding down with the patient recovering, or not. The new total number of dead today is 2575 in the US. No, that's not appropriate data for a percentage calculation but then neither is dividing today's dead into today's confirmed illness.

Next, two weeks ago, the confirmed cases number was 4500 with 88 dead. Now, it's 146,000 with 2575 dead. Cases have increased 32 fold in two weeks. Deaths have increased 29 fold. If those rates of increase don't change a lot, then in a month, a 100,000 total death toll will look like good times fondly remembered.

For those hoping it has already been around, think again. More than deaths, the hallmark of this nasty bug is the relatively high percentage rate of serious illness resulting in hospitalization. If you think you had it but your local hospitals weren't being crushed with pneumonia cases- then nope, you had the usual garden variety crap.

Let us all hope the current measures slow this thing down. I'm glad I don't live in a densely populated place.
