The medicine to treat adult heartworm is a cyanide. The worms can't process and eliminate it but dogs can.
Ivermectin kills the immature worms as a preventative, or along with the other drug in treatment.

If you can find Ivomec Plus, it'll get your liver flukes, too. I use it on my llamas as they're very prone to those when on irrigated pasture.

Ivermectin 1 CC for a 60lb dog is about right—i read it wrong and gave a dog 10 CC’s by mistake—didn’t seem to hurt the hound none. If the dog has a bad case of heart worm you can kill it purity quick with 1 CC.

Never heard of cyanide being used. Arsenic has been used in doses that were sub-lethal to the dog.

Wonder how many people have killed their dogs "self doctoring" so far? whistle

Don't take internet advice.

Take your dog to the vet for heart worm screening to see if it has heart worms. Then proceed with what medicines the vet prescribes for the weight, breed, and age of the dog.

I thankful that I'm not a dog belonging to some of you... wink

You just figured that out? The best thing to do with all the accumulated wisdom on the Campfire is to print it out and use that paper for fire starter.

No, I've known for awhile.

But to be fair, there's some good folks that offer up some good advice and fixes here too.

You just gotta use your BS filter to sift through it. wink

I asked our retied vet about this last night, he did not think much of the idea. I'm glad we have real scientists working on it.

Would be great if it works. Of course, anything will kill just about anything in a Petri dish.

But even if it doesn’t work on this Ivermectin is one of the modern miracle drugs that no one talks about. Everyone used to have worms and far from being a minor inconvenience they cause lots of health problems. Ivermectin cures just about any kind of worm and for all intents and purposes, humans can’t OD on it. It is truly a miracle drug.

I went down the rabbit hole on Ivermectin a year or two ago when reading about easily obtained medications everyone should have around. Before that, I just knew it as something we used to give our cows.

Bwwwaaaaaa... not a chance. We have been using it for our Labradors for 40 years. Not Collie or herding dogs approved.

So how much and how often for a lab weighing about 60lb, please?

The tube is graduated and marked. Check the dosage for a 1200 lb horse and divide by 20.

We redosed every six to 12 months.
