What makes the 6x42 more desirable than the 3-9x42 or 3-9x42, unless of course you want the G4 reticle?

The reason I would pick a 6x over a 3x9 is 1) less to mechanically/optically to go wrong, and 2) I have noticed some things about (about me) using rifle scopes when hunting. Many times, using a variable power scope when a shooting opportunity presents itself, I have the scope set at the "wrong" power setting. This may be the case or it may be that I just perceive that it is the wrong power setting. More than a few times in this case, by the time I twist up or down on the power ring, that shooting opportunity ceases to exist. If the magnification is a single power, I can just concentrate on the shot and do it. A 6x is plenty of power for any of my hunting. I do not ever see shooting at much more than 300 yards, realistically. There is a little concern about "getting on" an animal that suddenly appears very close, but in my 45 years of hunting, this has happened ( too much power for the distance) very infrequently. There is also a good chance that when these "pop-up" shots happen, I may be hunting with one of my rifles with Irons, a red dot or a 1x by whatever. Of course I would not take one of my 6x sighted rifles on a driven game hunt, although some hunters here in Romania do. So, 20 years ago I would have absolutely picked the 3x9, but today, especially after experience using a Leu VXII 6x36, I will pick the 6x for my next scope purchase. RJ

I've hunted mostly with 3-9s, but every shot I've taken in the field was on 3x. I played with a 6x last year and realized it will do all I need. I could get the G4 in 3-9 too.

I have a Meopta 6x42 Duplex on my Ruger 77/22 mag and , to paraphrase, it is " the scalpel of Thor" . Head shots on squirrel at 75 yards is easy. I have Muledeer's book " Optics for the Hunter", and his explanation that fixed power scopes, with fewer lenses than a variable offer greater clarity, less total distortion with fewer total lenses surfaces makes sense and works for these old eyes. Also, low light clarity and sharpness is slightly better. Wearing trifocals, I need all the help I can get.

Got hands on a 6x42 with the #4 reticle today and really like that reticle. THICK on the outside and fine enough for precision on the inside. Have only peered through it, not mounted or adjusted so I can't speak for those. If adjustments are repeatable and solid a zero-stopped elevation dial would cover a lot of ground for my hunting.

Mine arrived today as well! Looks good so far. Will do side-by-side with VX2, SHV, SS 3-9 tonight (Edit: and SS 6X). Often have some deer around the house right at dark. My scope comparison staff!
Debating a turret (Kenton) vs. just sighting in a couple inches high at 100 and calling it good.

I think y'all will like them. I've been using the Mepro 6x42 for 4-5 years now. One with a #1 Nazi and the other with the #4 Nazi.

Mine has a #4. Going on a Montana in 338 Fed. Think I'll just sight it in ~2" high at 100 skip the custom turret. I could shoot further than I've ever needed to with that setup. Definitely won't have a problem with this reticle around dark. Some scope comparing tonight. Horizon is 27mi. Farms in near ground are ~1.5mi. Burris FF II 4.5-14 SWFA SS 6x Nightforce SHV 3-10 Leupold VX2 3-9 Meopta 6x42 Vortex Viper 4-16 SWFA SS 3-9 They all work well in good light.

After viewing at longer distances and then watching a group of does from 20-60 yards until after legal light I’m very pleased with the 6x42. Going to be a great fit with the 84M.

Good to hear - how did the SHV compare to the others?

I'm very pleased with the SHV. As the light goes away it really shines. Only odd thing is the apparent image appears small to me. Not in FOV, or angular measurements, in apparent size. Like looking at an iPhone SE next to an iPhone 8. Same image, just smaller when comparing to an SWFA SS 3-9 for example (set to the same magnification setting). FWIW, the Meopta 6X is smaller than the SWFA 6X too. For what I want it to do, I think the Meopta 6X with the German #4 will be a great scope. Short of illuminated, that reticle is about as good as it gets for dark woods pointing.

Doe's anyone have the specs on the German #4 reticle? I am wondering about using the vertical post as a secondary aiming point.
