One of the more common methods of execution employed in China for centuries was to bury the condemned alive. Was still employed in the early 20th century. So this is not a surprise.

These are people who routinely immerse living dogs into boiling water as a method of killing, by the thousands, one at a time for consumption in festivals. Probably the diners can hear the screaming dogs.
This is a culture where if you saved a human life, you were responsible and liable for the welfare and actions of that person thereafter.
Is it such a stretch to believe they would toss anonymous old folks, wrapped in plastic, into incinerators?
