If I were only going to have one or the other it would be .223 because it's much cheaper to shoot with much longer barrel life and still covers varmints/predators to deer.

Thanks! As others said, overlap and price to play. What were you thinking for your SA and LA calibers? All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

The short action is would suggest a 223 if the missionary position completes your life. If you desire more the 17’s day r a fast twist 22-250 will bring spice to the safe.

So it is irons till the scope comes back. It is interesting since the Corona I have time to actually post guns. Maybe as snow gets melted I will do some of those fence post pictures.

For the long action, 338 Win Mag was the first thing that came to mind, though being able to hunt grizzlies and browns on a regular basis could easily make a 375 justifiable.

Henry makes a lever action, but I'd have to pass.

Thanks! Got my .223 long before I got a .243. As teal points out, a .223 is "super cheap to feed". I like that. I also appreciate the minimal recoil. I buy .223 bullets 500 to the box and boost them with 27g powder. Factory ammo is cheap, too. When my grandkids start shooting, the .223 will be the first centerfire they shoot. For my big game hunting purposes, I'll take a .243 over a .223 every time. Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE! No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's. A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Neck up a 30 Nosler & you would have a modern 35 Newton. It's fun spending someone else's money. I’d go with basically this, a medium bore in .33 or .35, your choice of long or short action. Good options in both calibers and actions.
