I have a No.1 in 22-250 I really like it even though it is picky with what I feed it. I’ve always kinda wanted one in 7x57 but I’m also a sucker for anything 7mm. A 257 Roberts would be cool too.

I wonder if merely machining a rim cutout wouldn’t make several of them ‘dual chambered’? 7x57/R, 307/308, 356/358, etc....I had an encore 356/358, that shot both very well. Could up your campfire cool factor w/o limiting your options as much.

My 1885 low wall is a .260. You can cover all those bases very easily with one, including elk.....mine has killed two so far.
I think a 6.5cm would be the best of breed for your needs, as you described them. 7-08 would be my next choice, but recoil will increase and it won’t kill any deader.... Those low-walls in 260 Rem are scarce as hen's teeth, and go for a pretty penny. IIRC, Winchester is chambering the 1885 in the 6.5 Creedmoor, but they are hard to sneak up on! ya! GWB Low wall in 260 was my first thought as well.

Seems to be a lot of single shot knowledge on this post so I'd like to ask a question. What do you think a Browning Low Wall in 260 in 90 +% would bring?
I cast another vote for a Dakota Model 10.

Do you dream of a rifle with or without a recoil pad?
Without pad: 6.5 Swede or Creedmoor, 23" barrel
With pad: 7/08 or .308, 20" barrel

The lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part!

The Swde would be sweet in a low wall.
Really anything from 6.5 to .30 cal with a case capacity in that ball park. Even a 30/40 would be sweet. Could push 130TTSX to at least 308Win velocity or a big ol slow 220 RN.

If I was having a custom single shot rifle made, such as a modified Ruger No1, a Dakota Model 10, or even a Winchester/Browning Hiwall, I'd have it chambered in 7-30 Waters or 307 Winchester. Something about a rimmed cartridge in a single shot rifle. The way I figure it, it wouldn't be my primary gun, but a gun to use on certain occasions. I 'd spend extra cash on the wood, and it'd make me smile every time I took it out.

At this point, I think I have it narrowed down to 280 Rem or 280 AI. If I go the Ruger #1 route it will definitely have to be a custom because they weigh more than I want, the Dakota in 280 is beautiful but I'm not sure I want to spend 6K to get what I want. If I can find a reasonable priced one in another caliber, I would have it re-barreled.
You guys have some beautiful rifles. thank you for sharing.
Enough already, just shoot it!

Had a really nice #1 tack driver in .280 Rem. Great rifle but, for me, too nice to take elk hunting. Used it in nice weather for antelope but sold it and bought a Ruger All Weather Hawkeye in .280 Rem instead. A .270 Win/150g/2910fps or .280 Rem/155g/2870fps high bullet will give you a good 600-700 yard elk rifle at 7000 feet altitude, with only about 18 ft-lbs recoil. Daughter #1 will be using the former with a Nosler 150g ABLR for elk this fall, I'm working up the latter with Federal 155g Terminal Ascent. Both deliver about 2100fps and 1500fpe at 700 yards. With a 26" barrel on a #1 you should be able to hit 3000fps M.V. with either without any problems.
Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE!
No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I have two Ruger #1 Tropical Rifles in 6.5x55 Swede and 280 Remington that are both good single-shot hunting rifle choices any day of the week. These would be my choices...

How about a #1 in 275 Rigby? If you want even less recoil a 257 Roberts could be a winner.

If you’re looking at Dakota 10 or Merkel you should seek out Luxus 11 ($4.5K-$7K) and Martini-Hagn (Fine Canadian Gunmaker $5K-$9K). They’re all Farquharson based actions (except Merkels) same as Ruger No 1 with exceptional workmanship and artisan quality second to none. Chamber wise you can’t go wrong with a 270 Win or 308 Win. Ammo found anywhere on the globe and will do anything a 7x57 or 280 Rem will do.
BTW GW you have some mighty fine equipment. How does the Luxus shoot?
