My mother in law still has my brother in law’s Garanimals corduroy pants and little boy size turtle neck sweaters stacked 4 ft high on a KENMORE dryer that quit working 15 yrs ago in her laundry room.
He is 45 years old.
Can only get the door open about 10” to get in there. Had to help them fix a water pipe for the bathtub thru a wall in there. Holy chit I want kick her ass up between her ears.
My father got like that back in the 70’s with tube radios and TVs. Worst thing was he had no idea how to even begin to repair them. Thankfully, he stored 99% of it in the barn.
When we were cleaning up the property when they went to sell and I was chucking this crap into the pickup to take it to the dump. He was whining “Be careful. They’re antiques!!”
I said “BS, they’re garbage” and kept tossing.
Actually, a lot of those old tube radios are worth money, some are worth thousands. I hope u didn't toss any god ones.
Guys go nuts for the tubes alone. You could literally have a small fortune in vacuum tubes, let along output transformers. And thats just parting things out. You very likely tossed out some actual, real, serious coin there.

I knew a guy years ago that told me that when he was growing up he never had friends over to his house because his mother was a hoarder. He was too ashamed to have his friends see the house he lived in.

Buying a farm from my buddy, whose mother lived in the house on it until she passed away three years ago. We just spent nearly a month cleaning out the house. His mom grew up in the Depression. Never threw anything away. Bought anything anyone called trying to sell her. Load after load to the dump, literally tons, and buddy bought a 20 foot shipping container to store the stuff he wants to keep and still needs to sort through. He is no slouch himself, has three barns, a detached two car garage with a workshop, and the basement and closets of his house full of stuff, to the point he cannot fit the few tables his mother had that were worth keeping in any of the barns.
So I was cleaning out the spare bedroom one morning, and moved one of the two beds out. Under it, a large orange cat was practically welded to the carpet. It was one of his mom’s cats that had gone missing sometime around 2014. His mother lived in the house until 2017, he was there to check on her every day, and claims they never smelled the cat that was decomposing into the carpet of the next room. I am a bit of a clean freak and somewhat minimalist in my thinking, being involved in this has left me just astounded at times.
People ruin a house to the point of having to gut it and start over, just by filling it up with so much schit that they cannot even clean it. And then add a few tomcats to the equation, and it gets really amazing. She was a nice lady, amazing gardener, and fairly wealthy, my buddy is much the same, but both of them are/were hoarders and animal lovers that take in strays. His house and hers are both disgusting to me, and I can’t wrap my head around what makes people that way, especially when they are sane about everything else and have the resources to do better.

We found baby socks that were my buddy’s in his mom’s dresser. He is 73.

1987 my business partner bought a bungalow on Venice Beach by sealed bid exterior viewing only. when we rolled up to take possession the young guy whose mother had lived there for 55 years kinda just tossed us the keys and skiddaddled. we found we couldn't open the door, so found a window next to it that was unlocked. pushed back the drapes and the whole house was full of cat crap, cat food cartons, cat skeletons , and news paper in layers from the floor to the ceiling. there were little paths you could walk sideways from the front window to the back door, and to the bathroom. how the woman sat on the toilet is still beyond me. being this was beach front property we made a little on just the land after we demolished the house. another one was a apartment quad complex we bought . the piping was from Korea and had rotted along the seam in every piece in the place. the hot water leaked around the angle stops in the baths and kitchens . this place was 85 units and all were occupied by Wets. the first time i inspected the place to form our plan of attack i looked under a kitchen sink. the wall behind the cabinet was Black.and moved. took me a little while to realize it was cockroaches. i hurled. cant stand those filthy things. lost money on that project. had gangbangers knock the ladders off from under guys patching stucco so had to hire armed security. did i ever mention i hate California?

Had an uncle that never moved out of my grandparents house. Got married, and raised a family and divorced. All while living there. He was constantly dragging junk chit home. Cars and trucks he was “gonna fix” he did eventually move into an older run down house that was on the place about 200 feet from grandma and grandpa’s. Still ate all his meals and occasionally showered there. Just slept and apparently whacked off constantly at “his” house. When he died we threw a dump truck load of porno mags away that he had stashed in there. Along with a transmission out of his pickup that he had in the bathtub.
I feel like a hoarder when I go into my reloading room or my gun vault. I've done pretty well the last few months and haven't bought any more guns or reloading stuff. My great grandkids should be set for reloading stuff.
My FIL wasn't a classic hoarder but did things like keep a 50's outboard motor in case he got a boat one day. He had 40s-50s car radios that were still good, it just needed a resistor or diode. Old, old fishing reels he meant to repair. They were rusted solid. The house was immaculate, the garage was his domaine.
I went into several houses om EMS calls that had paths through the house head high in some places. When they burned, they were a real treat. Usua;;y had fire pushing hard out all the windows and long hours overhauling. My former sister in-law was a hoarder. It was really weird. She managed to practically fill a 2400 square foot home in about 2 years.

i have known a number. one guy who kind of big time stunk, we called the "dog food" man. he worked in a kitchen would often bring home food to eat taken off the plates of diners, and actually did buy dog food to fry up. his house where he lived with his mother was covered from floor to ceiling with little passage ways through the junk. his mother finally slipped in the bathroom, fell, and died. he left her there for three or four days. when it was discovered they at first threw him in jail thinking he had killed her, which wasn't true. the irony of it was he had over 250k in his brokerage account. I would leave the office when he came in because of the smell.
had another guy who after his death i was given the job of disposing of his firearms, which he had stored in a rathole. i put on a face mask when i went in there. there were cans of 50 yeare old smokless powder that was leaching out of the cans.
My grandfather. He was a driller in the oilfield for close to 50 years. Whenever they would wear out a bit he would bring them home and stack them in the barn yard. After he died we literally hauled 4 ten yard dump truck loads of them away. There were at least 15 non-working chainsaws in his shed.
Edited to add: he was the same way with drill stem. After he retired he put a pipe fence around 80 acres with a drill bit on top of each post. The 4 dumptruck loads was what was left after he finished that
My goal the last couple years has been to purge all the screws with flat balde or phillips heads! Hopefully when I die they won't find anything but Torx head screws in this place LOL.
I like that plan. May even use it.

Meanwhile, the empty Macadamian Chocolate Cluster jars I am saving are getting ahead of my sorting the garage odds and ends....
We either gotta eat fewer of those things or I have to sort faster....
