Paul that was one of my favorite movies growing up. Years ago I heard that scene was quite costly on horses not to mention busted up a few riders.

Idaho, no new dog yet but yesterday evening my mom texted me a pic of a blue heeler and border collie cross pup(s) that are for sale locally.

Hard to start over but you gotta keep on.

We did recently get 3 new saddle horses.

Heeler/BC cross? Interesting.

In my limited experience, you need a 2x4 to get the heeler's attention. But a GOOD heeler is the best dog in the world when handling aggressive range cows.

On the other hand, I have seen range cows run a B/C out of the corral.

The cross might just be the best of both worlds.

I

Hanco, it looked much scarier in real life!

Las, rolling my ATV down the hill would not cause me to smile.

Griz, what can I say, straight up puzzed out...

To tell you the truth Sam, that looked like that was one of those times when the picture doesn't do the subject justice. I knew it had to be worse than it looked.

On the topic of Man From Snowy River, I happened to see that movie in Bozeman where they screened it before general release. At that time there was at least twice as much "rough riding" as there was in general release. And when I say rough, I'm not kidding. It was impressive. I'm not surprised at injury to horse and man although I hadn't heard that.
The next time I saw the movie I wondered where all the riding disappeared to.

Whiptail, that pasture(BLM) is big and you can cover 2-3x as much country on a 4 wheeler versus a horse. It does have some rough areas and some trees so my buddy and I figured next time it might not be a bad idea to have someone horseback.

FWIW it took 6 of us two days to gather and move out of it.

I put about 60 miles on the 4 wheeler over the 2 days.

Griz, I just watched it again and it really does look like it would not be a big deal driving down. Real life though is way different.

Last summer a guy was out helping and had a newer 700 Griz, tried climbing a hill way less steep than the one I chickened out and didn't make it.

Luckily he didn't get hurt but the machine rolled several times and needed a couple grand in repairs.

ID, I was wrong, blue heeler and Australian shepherd.

People over in SD have them. They'd probably be good dogs but I've never been around an Aussie.

Aussie X huh, never been around an aussie working cattle. Cousins had one for a pet, that don't count.

I got a cute little aussie bitch pup just before the wife and I were married. She was smart as a whip. (the dog, wife was foolish enough to keep me around for almost 35 years now).

Anyway, by the time the pup was old enough to be physically able to run and jump, I had taught her to jump up at the snap of my fingers and nip Momma on the butt. Yea, she still married me and kept me around. shaking head here.

Momma and I were in town at the time and really had no proper place for a cow dog. So I gave the pup to a lady I worked with who had horses and rode for cattle with friends. She said the dog worked out well.
