I've seen quite a few over the years, but never saw behavior like that. Normally they want not be seen or heard and move out quickly.
Once she backed him a decent distance from her kittens she eased up, but stayed on him because he was retreating and showing no threat. And, as some here said, she could sense/small his fear. She bluff charged him more than once and got no counter punch, so she stayed on it but apparently had zero intent to fully engage him - because she could have done so at any point, and did not. I assume he made a "new move" by picking up a rock - that surprised her - not part of the scheme - and she was gone quick.

That fellas instagram account shows pics of guns. He seems to be an owner. Probably just needs to find an effective way to carry while running.

This guy (Kyle) is the nephew of a college friend of mine. He's no liberal snowflake. On this day, he was not hiking, he was trail running. He came upon 4 lion cubs in the trail and thought they were bobcat kittens. He got out his camera and that's when mama showed up and he knew he was in big trouble. He is a gun owner. He said every time he tried to reach down to grab a rock or stick is when the lion charged, so he had to keep retreating, keeping himself as big as possible. He had a water bottle in one hand and his phone in the other. He was actually retreating uphill the entire time, away from the trailhead. He had to go back through the area after waiting 1/2 hour or so. He did well. Didn't get attacked. He did a lot of things right.

THE BIGGEST THING HE DID WRONG WAS HE HAD NO HANDGUN ,very foolish. When people get away with stuff enough times, to them it becomes the norm. "Would never happen to me." Not smart but pretty common. I'll bet there's plenty here that think the same way at times.

Saw an interview with him on tv this am. He finally had the moment to pick up a rock (when the queen didn’t charge when he squatted down), threw it, and the cat ran off. FWIW.

Good to know. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I remember two women hiking on a trail in California and one was throwing stuff at the mountain lion who had her partner and was trying to pull her away from the cat. Didn't go well.

Just thinking what I'd pack out and about in that kinda country. What came to mind is my FA .357, already set up for heavies with taller front sight. It does very well with 170 Gold Dots and 180 XTP's. Similar cast bullets would work. It's light enough for easy carry, yet serious enough for serious work. Big ole cat that close would have been slam dunk kitty with one of those heavy slugs. Now, this gun would need a holster, isn't a pocket pistol. So, not sure what some left leaning state laws would permit. That would have to be checked out. Wouldn't be a problem here in Louisiana, besides I'm a CCW. However, our kitties aren't that big, lesser ordinance would probably be OK. I guess if I was a jogger, a fanny pack would be Kosher, probably more P.C. than a holster... Never had a fanny pack, have no desire for one. Ya just don't see them out in the woods around here.... DF

At the very least, I’ve always got a Ruger LCP in .380 or .22 LR in my pocket. Either would work on a mountain lion. Lots of them killed with a 22 mag by those hunting them with dogs.
But in that area, I’d probably been carrying either my Glock 20 10mm, or Glock 32 in .357 Sig.
Kitty might have got a couple of warning shots before I shot her. Since she as a mom with kittens.

Its been a while, but when you're running I recall everything attached to you bounces around, gonna get bathed in sweat too. A fanny pack might work, I'd want one of those Scandium Airlite J-frames or something equally light inside it tho.
It might be better/easier if you could run with the firearm in your hand, inside a case or bag if preferable.

Smaller, lighter, 10 + 1 rounds of CCI Stingers, and much cheaper than a Scandium J Frame S&W. I know it’s not a .38 special, but it beats the heck out of a stick or rock. 🤠 I remember then Gov Rick Perry taking out a coyote with one in .380 while jogging in Austin Year’s ago. The .380 version loaded with Buffalo Bore Hard Cast Outdoorsman loads is a pretty good pocket carry option too. Mine feeds and shoots them well.

Definitely should've had pepper spray or/and a gun but, considering he didn't, he stayed alot more calm and focused that most probably would've in the same situation. The video was certainly cool but not picking up a big rock with both hands could've easily been a fatal mistake. Glad he's ok and that video's now a lesson for a lot of other folks that need to see it as well......
Biden's most truthful quote ever came during his first press conference, 03/25/21. Drum roll please...... "I don't know, to be clear." and THAT is one promise he's kept!!!

I would have picked up a rock or big F’n stick a lot sooner than he did.
But - she had babies, so even if I had a firearm, it would have been warning shots ..
Still a pretty hairy situation.

No doubt. I wouldn’t have wasted time filming it with my cell phone either !!!
