Anyone ever use the 165 grain 30 caliber cast bullet sold by Kings Shooter Supply? Looking to load some in the 30-30win and 30-40krag and need to figure out the BNH number of them. Box states that they are "super Hard Cast bullets". Only thing I can find on the website is that the pistol bullets are BNH of 21. If you have used them how fast did you run them and what powders did you use? Also are they an acceptable hunting bullet or just good for plinking?

I think they are too hard for hunting unless you take CNS shots. They probably will not expand and may shatter on impact. Better for hunting is 12-14 BHN.

Just some general info. Many cast bullet makers make their bullets overly hard . This is to satisfy those who want to drive them faster that what works as a hunting bullet. And also to give except-able accuracy for these who want the high velocity. When I cast my hunting bullets like the 180 gr I make for my 30-30 or other 30 cal rounds, no harder than a BN 12. Now my old wheel weights test at 10,5 to 11 BN. They easily drive accurately to 1600 fps. Now to some this is not acceptable. But if you actually shoot these bullets they will surprise you just how well they perform. For 308 to 30-06 a 200 gr bullet is very efficient at 1600. It will amaze you. These of course are not for long range , but will perform quite well inside 200 yds, If you wish long range then a jacketed bullet is more appropriate. .

Yep. I regard 2000fps as top end with my 190 fn's I load for hunting cast of WW's with a pinch of tin added for mould fill-out. BHN of around 12 as measured with an LBT hardness tester. I can squeeze that velocity out of my M54 Winchester 24" barrel with 28gr. 3031. No leading and great accuracy.

The key is bullet fit. Ignore groove diameter and strive for throat diameter. The idea is to seal the hot propellant gasses behind the bullet from the git go.

Super hard bullets are great at the range but suck in the deer woods.
