My Savage 99 was manufactured in 1901. The barrel is stamped sav 30. First, can anyone confirm this ammo and where I can get it. I am hearing it is possibly 30-30, but this does not load properly into the carrier. I am also told the carrier may have been replaced with an incorrect one. Original is brass and this one is aluminum. So I am told. Back to the ammo- I found a reference that said that the barrel was a true 30 cal and that Savage made ammo for it that measured .311 inch. I do not know if any of this makes any sense. I would like to learn more about this firearm and get it operational. Maybe replacing the carrier (if it is not correct) and or getting proper ammo. I can put one 30-30 round in the carrier but the carrir will not rotate to accept a second round. I had a gunsmith take a look at it and thr carrier is working. I just is not right for a 30-30.
Thanks

Sav 30 = 30-30 Winchester.

Your rotor: if it is aluminum is not correct

Perhaps the barrel was rechambered and not marked on the barrel?

I would have a chamber cast made if I were you.

any chance of finding a correct rotor? I will make a chamber cast. A friend has been talking to me about doing that.

I am interested. It does not need to be right away. I will get a chamber cast. If there is any information you need to make sure the roter is correct for my savage, just let me know. Is it also your thought that sav 30 is a 30-30? Thank you.

I'm not fireball2, but a sav 30 is a .30-30 winchester. I have two of them marked that way.

Thank you. This means the carrier (rotor) is not correct. Hopefully Fireball will have the one I need.

I have lots of rotors and 30-30's I just need to compare them and get you the right one. We also need to make sure your cartridge guide is correct. Please feel free to send me a private message as a reminder. Headed out hunting right now.

Are you sure it's aluminum?

There were some very early 1899's with silver rotors. Very few, but I've run into a couple.

Some case dimensions 30-30 Win vs. .303 Savage

The base-to-shoulder of a .303 Savage is listed as 1.351"; in a 30-30 it is listed as 1.440".
The base diameter of a .303 Savage is listed as 0.442; the base diameter of the 30-30 is listed as 0.4195".

… so I would think the longer base-to-shoulder on a 30-30 would prevent a 30-30 from chambering in a .303 Savage; and the larger base diameter of the .303 Savage would prevent a .303 Savage chambering in a 30-30.

I am not sure it is aluminum. That was a guess from the gunsmith I went to. He said they were origionally brass. So it could be silver. Any suggestions how I figure that one out? I will do some research. And thanks for the thread links. I will go through them.

Thank you for the cartrage dimensional references. A chamber cast should clear that up. I think?

By silver, did you mean silver colored (steel), or actually made of silver?

My Granddad's .303 made in 1901 has that oddball rotor as well. It is not aluminum. Appears to be some kind of potmetal. I found another one in ebay years ago. You could replace it with brass but I'm sure it's original.

Is it possible that there is a second "3" missing from that "30"? Just a WAG.

Silver colored. See Lightfoot's post above.

I don't even know if you could put a post-1960 aluminum rotor into a pre-90,000 serial number gun.. ??
