I have shot deer with .224, 243, .257, .264, .277, .284, and .308.

They all work, you pay your money and take your choice.

I have plenty of rifles in .323 and .338 that would probably work, too.

My personal favorites are 6.5-06 120 gr NBT and 7mmRM 140 gr NBT.

It makes little difference when shot is well-placed. There are some extra fine choices like custom shop Model 7 cal 7-08 with light Kevlar reinforced stock. It comes down to ease of carrying a rifle especially if one has a lot of walking to do.

Thats called "thrifty".
Most thrifty folks don't spend $28 dollars for socks.
Taking good care of your feet makes good economic sense. A .270 is almost as good as a .30-06. I had to use one while my Model 700 was getting re-barreled. It worked. I just didn't tell anyone. Kind of like a colored girlfriend.

i think i will do all 35's this year

35 whelen 7600 carbine - 1st day
358 ruger 77 rs carbine - 2nd day
35 rem marlin 336d guide gun - 3rd day
out back of the house i usually take my 1919 rem mod 14r 35 rem

the only thing that will change that plan will be if it gets rainy or snow. then i switch to a ruger 77 frontier in 338 federal stainless/laminate.

It's supposed to rain most of the first week here so will be taking my Ruger M77 Hawkeye all weather .30-06. It's the only stainless/synthetic rifle I own and was purchased specifically for rainy weather use. On days when it's not raining will take either my Winchester 94 or Marlin 336, both chambered in .30-30.

1939 K98 8x57
Sako picked em up around europe after WW2 did some customizing and sold em in American Px,s in europe till the early 60,s.

This sure as heck didnt look like this when I found it at a pawnshop.
Probably one of the better project rifles I have ever done.

Sightron SII 3-9X42
Burris low rings
Weaver steel base,s

Installed during the off season
Timney trigger set at 2pd 2 oz
26 pd wolff firing pin spring
Zeroed it earlier this week.
Accurate and hard hitting with Sellior & Bellot 196gr SPCE 2592 fps

I killed a shriveled ball sack 3.5 yr mutant 5 pt last year with it after running it down for a shot for about 300 yds of stop and start running on Slumlords place.

He was a spectator for the whole thing, cause we was actually getting his 8pt outta the woods he shot earlier.

About 115 125 yds thru the timber.
Deer never had a chance.
Never seen a Buck thru the scope body shudder like that on impact so hard before.
Left a instant blood trail stevie wonder could have followed for 40 yds.
LOL!!!
I got 2 Buck tags for rifle season starting tommorow morning.

I've never owned or fired a 270 but know of many younger boys who started with one and a few ladies who love theirs. It's got a niche for the recoil sensitive.

I don't think a 243 is more manly than a 270 but I have used one for deer and antelope harvesting many times. The 260 was cool to try out back in the day but the 30 cal and larger cartridges just plain kill better.

Too many choices and not enough time. Always favored the 270 with 130 BT,have 3 of them but for past 2 years I 've either carried mt win 70 270wsm or model 7 6mm rem. Like mentioned shot placement is the key,I've taken quite a few with my handy rifle 22 hornet with 45gr sp, 1 shot through the lungs will do it.
