That's a hell of a fish Haver!!

We have Channel cats up here and the biggest I've caught is 35-40 lbs, I can't imagine one 80 lbs.

What river?

Chicken breast chucks about the size of a golf ball. Normally I use fresh chicken but these has been in the bag getting ripe since I took the boys last week. It has been cool so it wasn’t bad but they were ripe. Other times of the year I use small bluegill or chunks of shad but chicken breast is cheap and very effective.

Baited on a Team Catfish double action 5/0 circle hook. 18-22” of 40# mono to a barrel swivel followed by a bead and 3-5oz of lead. Been using the flat “no roll” weights this year. I am a fan. 20# mono main line on 9’6 medium heavy salmon rods. (My old plug rods for kings in the river) Abu Garcia 6501s or Shimano 401s.

Ok I didn’t realize that you were using 6501’s or 401’s....that’s a true feat reeling in anything with a left handed reel. In fact the IGFA should have a category exclusively for fish caught on left handed reels. 😁

I have buddies that do that but I’m just not ambidextrous enough to do it. I don’t have to worry about my friends using my Avets or Internationals and they don’t have to worry about me using their 6501’s when a rod gets tripped from the riggers. 😉

Nice blue!

I've never fished the Potomac, but I live damn near within sight of the James and have chased the blues on that river. I just bought another boat and am in the middle of reoutfitting to go chase them again.

I sold out in '17, didn't know if I'd be able to get in and out of a boat after a car wreck, turns out I'm good to go, so back at it again!

Congrats again on the fish, and I bet the kids loved the experience.

I take it that the catfish’s weight was a ‘guesstimate’?

Kind of. It maxed out a 35kg/77lbs scale that a guy fishing near us brought over. So it was an educated guesstimate.

That sounds like quite a Chinese fire drill for a minute or two!

Wild caught fried catfish is one of the better things in life.

Great story, great fish. Nicely done.
