It doesn't matter the brand , problems with all if now run frequently . Fuel quality issues running ethanol .
I dont think many will argue that Stihl and Husky are the two top brands.

Richard, little trees for now.
The bigger ash are alive and well.
Rick, non-ethanol only in any gas engine around here.

I have a little bit of an issue with the 550.
If you don't clean or replace the air filter it'll bog down on lift off.

I have owned more than a few Husky and Stihl Saws. Along with some Jonsereds and Dolmars. Cant beat a pro model Stihl or Husky. The non pro models from both brands aren't that great and if it's got farm boss or rancher in its model it isn't a pro saw.

Just fix this to replace my 40 yo Stihl 031AV, which is/was just an amazing saw.
Talked to my local dealer, the man of Stihl, bearhuntr here.
Bought an MS250. A bit hard to start with high compression, but is a beast when cutting, but not in weight. Purchased on last day of their fall sale last week.
That’s what I have. I’m going to say it’s nearly 20 years old. It’s one cutting SOB. Mostly I bought it because it’s light weight and I could use it clearing trails. I have used it for that and more. Tough to beat it for a small chore saw.
Camp is where you make it.

Stihl MS 250 for your described needs. Can be found for $300 on sale. It rips with a 16" bar.The only negative is that they are easy to flood when starting. However, once you know how to start, it's a good running saw.
Another saw I'd recommend is the Echo CS-490. Light and packs enough power. Can be had for about the same price and you get 5cc bigger engine (50cc vs 45).

What is the difference between th 0 series and the MS series?.. Th “0” series are older saws of the Stijl line. “MS” started out as the same as the “O’s” and, have progressed to their current version. An example would be the 026 going to the MS260, then the MS261, and now will be the MS261c-e.

Looking for a smaller gas powered chainsaw. Maybe an 18" bar no bigger than 20". I've narrowed it down to Stihl or Husqvarna. What brand would you choose and what model.
I'm looking to spend less than $500 and won't be using it too much. Just to take camping and cut camp firewood and clear trees out of the road. Something that won't take up too much room in the back of the truck but something reliable.
Local store has both 10% off tonight.
Thanks, Bb I bought the Husquavarna 440 with the 18" bar that you can buy most anywhere. They're around $300. It's cut lots of firewood, accomplished some drunken projects, and has assisted with downed trees in at least two bad storms. I have ran it from -30 in Montana to 90+ in the Everglades. It has never seen any fuel below 90 octane and it has never seen any fuel that did not have Sta-Bil in it. It has ran 100% of the time. Never one problem in at least five years of ownership. Buy a file set and learn to sharpen on the bar.

An avg homeowner guy. But cuts a lot. Woodstove, wooded property. After four years give a thumbs up to the stihl MS261. I did buy one with the 18” bar instead of factory 20. In retrospect, if was running real-man chains and not safety chains, probably didn’t need to do that, but. Anyway, pretty darn good swiss army knife. Starts, runs, “put up wet”, still no issues.
Down the line, will probably keep it around, but get in its place a 16” and a 20”. Gets a bit heavy limbing after a day, and conversely there are times when need a little more bar or little more grunt. But, heck, who hasn’t.
Heck of a saw, though.
Golldammed motion detector lights. A guy can’t even piss off his porch in peace any more.
