We went to sportsman’s last night. I got to handle the new Ruger 5.7. It’s seems like a nice pistol. Decent ergonomics. I wouldn’t mind having one, but the ammunition shelves were bare. No point in buying something you can’t find ammunition for.
I looked at a Diamond Back 5.56 pistol, I believe it also comes with a 300 BO barrel. $ 899 so I passed.
But yeah ammunition was slim. I did find 2 boxes of 00 in 25 round boxes.
Also went to our local Sportsman's yesterday. Shelves are shockingly bare. Centerfire primer display racks are completely empty, save two boxes of Federal shotgun primers. Powder selection is meager, as is their bullet inventory. If you go online, you find precious little that is available, of anything. Same thing with Midway, Midsouth, you name it.
I'd rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave....
Wish there was still a Sportsman's around here, but it shut down several years back. No Gander Mountain either.
I was gun manager of one of the last stores they opened in 2008, right before the bottom dropped out. They couldn't get inventory so they shut us down after 9 months. It was a great place to work and a great place to shop. They've recently bought some old F&S and Gander locations in lower Michigan and I visited one of them. They didn't seem to have the same feel. A great small chain out of Ohio is called Fin, Feather & Fur. I really like going there. It's more like the old Sportsman's Warehouse. Good inventory, good prices and good employees.

I purchased a ruger 5.7 last spring fun gun to shoot. When I purchased 1,000 rounds of the FN was $27 bucks 50 per box now gougers are trying to get $100-$180 per 50 round box.
If ammo companies are cranking ammo out, where is it?
I might purchase one of those Rugers someday, but not if I can’t find ammunition.
Easiest explanation...store gets 10 boxes in a week. Each customer buys 1-2 boxes. It lasts all week. Now we have a "crisis". First customer sees 10 boxes and buys all of them=empty shelf.

Sportsman here had some 9mm and 22lr last week. Both had a limit of 2 boxes. The 9mm was gone by 10 am. The 22lr did a little better but didn't last the day.
You didn't use logic or reason to get into this opinion, I cannot use logic or reason to get you out of it.

The only fresh 308 ammo I've seen recently was Federal 150- and 180-grain blue-box about a month ago. They had what looked like a case of each on the shelves, and yes, I bought the limit of two boxes per item. I'd imagine it was all gone by lunch time.
I took it straight to the range, shot test groups at 100 and 200 yards, and chronographed it. No changes from pre-COVID performance in that rifle, which was very high.

This past Friday the Albuquerque SW had all the 6mm and 6.5mm Creedmoor you could ever want. Handgun or other rifle stuff? Not so much....pretty barren.
