Preface - my #1 rifle is a Kimber Montucky, 7-08 and it does everything I could possibly want for my hunting right now. Syn, light and very accurate.

I have a line on a Ruger MKII in 7 SAUM. ANIB. Wood stocked and legitimately appears to be unfired at a good price. Were it stainless, I'd have bought it already.

I reload so - my question is, why do I need the SAUM? Trying to be talked into this from you guys I guess....

On a cartridge v cartridge perspective - what's it giving me over the 7-08?

It'll give more recoil, one less round in the belly as a minimum, schittier brass, increased ES/SD,more noise, more cost, less barrel life, far schittier balance/handling and a compromised optics mounting system. If them are "good" things, opt the route. Hint.........................(grin)

I also have a montana in 7mm-08 that does everything I need, but have always had an itch for a 7saum. One finally popped up in a rifle I liked and I went for it. I'm just starting to work on it, but I view it as a 7-08 that kicks heavier bullets at about the same velocity as the standard does with 140's. Needed? No, but no matter how many hints a guy gets, sometimes he just has to go and do it
himself. grin

I'm rebarreling a Kimber 325 WSM to 7 SAUM right now and have ADG brass and 180 Scenars on hand for it. Would I go down this road if I didn't already have a WSM action to work with? Probably not... grin

I love my 08 with the 162 so far. Kinda wondering if a "little more" was mo bettah.

The platform itself don't horn me up, tho I do generally dig Rugers.

Were it a Montucky - It would also already be in my mits - concessions be damned.

Mine is a Rem custom shop alaskan wilderness model seven. Stainless with mcm stock. It would be perfect if it were set-up as an "adl". Not a big fan of floor-plates.

I only have (3) Montucky 7 Whizzums. Hint.(grin)

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

Have only had (1) Seven in 7mm ShamWow. Hint.

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

Seven/700 BDL bottom "metal" is Dog Schit, for certain. I'd go AICS DBM and binderless there, for both improved feed/function and the COAL increase. Hint.

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

The .661 BC Skinner 180 REALLY pales to the 180 Hornie ELD's .796. Hint.

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

I hear good thangs about the 190 Beer Cans. Hint.

Ruger COAL and ring spacing sucks. Seven COAL wayyyyyyyyy sucks worse. The Montucky 7 Whizzum connects all dots and easily. Hint.

Or so I hear through The Grapevine...........................(grin)

Yep. I remember you being hot on the wizzum in 'tucky which is why the Shamu caught my eye to begin with.

IIRC, Ruger didnt make many of the short mags which is also why I bothered to pick it up outta the rack. It's like 550 clams too - likely due to chambering.

I'll likely pass on it but I still do like the idea of a quick 7. That fat bastard 7RM you're cooking, stuck in my head tho not at that weight.

True, that.

"AICS DBM and binderless there, for both improved feed/function and the COAL increase"

Interesting. I'll look into that.

The easy button is a 700 L/A in 280. Lapooey brass,190's,modest recoil and amazing performance. Hint.

That's where I intended to go before this rifle showed up and likely where I'll end up once I'm done playing.

I've only shot the .224" 90,.243" 110,.264" 135 and 153 and the .284" 190. Have multiple rifles set up expressly for them. Hint................

They are slick and consistent, while doing favors that ELD's can't. If you have the RPM,throat geometry and COAL,they certainly rate a thunk. Hint...................

The 7 SAUM is a good cartridge but to me it belongs in a lighter and maybe shorter rifle. I would buy the Ruger because of the price and maybe even sell it with out shooting it, you could easily get your money back and more if you got any collectors bidding on it.

The 280 AI is a favorite especially if you are not going for a fly weight rifle. The 280 AI generates enough recoil that I wouldn't want anything lighter than the NULA chambered for it.

The NULA,Fieldcraft and Montucky 280/280AI/'06 route is a bust, due mechanics,as the COAL "latitude" is hilariously trite. Hint......................
