Mine's bigger, cheaper, and came from Harbor Freight.

The quality of all thread Rod does vary, but I am extremely doubtful you're going to be able to bend it as you desire without it breaking or losing structural integrity.

Of course heating it and bending it on a radius like the inside of a sheave may work, but for me I would still be concerned about the unknown structural weakness occurring.

Maybe I am wrong but would it be possible to modify an eye bolt to your needs more readily?

I guess pictures would indeed help

Then mine is guaranteed to be better quality. wink

This tool is specifically designed to bend rod up to (IIRC) 3/8" diameter. It does a superb job on even stainless steel.

Just realized I have an Imgur account. I downloaded the pic but when I tried to upload it the file is still too damn large.

I’ll figure out how to bend it.

A “bend” may have been a poor choice of word, should have said: I want to put a 3/4” kink about an 1/8” deep with the ends of the rods in the same alignment.

Thanks Barney, the bottom photo is exactly what I’m trying to do. I realize the bends will have some rounding in them as well.

Weld two eyes together with the rod sticking out to opposite sides. Cut the eyes off on one side (150 degrees of arc) so you have a droop loop.

All thread coupler nuts could be useful.

Buy about 3 ft so you can screw it up a few times.

No schit - it broke. I probably should have tried some heat from a torch.

But it was a cheap threaded rod anyway. I’ve got some 4” stainless steel screws that I can take the head off and use a torch on. I’ll pick up a threaded coupler and see if that will make it easier.

With all the stress risers that threads create in rod, you really don't want to be bending it, not even hot. Especially the really cheap grade 0 (not a typo) stuff you get at the local hardware store. Get yourself some 3/16 solid rod, cut and bend to shape, then use a die to thread the ends as needed. The major diameter is a teensy bit shy of where it should be, and it's probably just mild steel, but I bet you're not putting any real load on this are you?

Oh, and if that's just not possible and you have to use all-thread, then concentrate the heat on the inside of the bend, so you're more likely to be compressing rather than stretching.

Sounds like the best bet to me

I thought of clamping it against a 3/4” wide piece of metal and sticking it to a longer piece, and then putting 2 narrow pieces of metal on the opposite side thick enough to allow it to bend and clamp the hell out of it in the vice.

I suppose heating it with a torch would help but I only need the bend it in about an 1/8”.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. (I have a pic that I can upload but the file is too large).

Cut a piece of 10-24 rod 12" long and put 4 nuts on the 6" section that you need with 2 nuts at either end of your deflection. Line the nut flats up and clamp all 4 nuts loosely in a 6" vice. Carefully tap a slow wedge under the area of your deflection (between the inner nuts) until you get the bend you need.
Cut the long end off and smooth your threads.
