All them ammos and powders and bullets fell in the hole I think.

Then when I smelt, I bring to temp slowly, stirring often. If I miss any in the sorting, they become obvious well before they melt.

When I cast, I run the alloy just hot enough to get good pours, and no hotter. The pot temp requirement varies with the external temp.

Dang it, got caught bein’ cute. I do it your way too, but my keyboard is almost wore out. grin

I ran straight wheelwright allot at 750 degrees and learned the proper time lapse between pouring, cutting the sprue, and refilling the mold which would result in good fillout of the mold and no frosted bullets.

After a while it just became routine.

Then I got fancy and bought some Linotype. I never could cast worth a damn with Linotype. Linotype required a completely different temperature and casting rhythm. I went back to quench cast straight wheelwright alloy.

Lino has its uses, but not as a straight alloy for casting. What a fella needs in the locker is pure lead, WW and Lino. Little pile of tin won’t hurt. Learning a bit about alloy mixes and how it relates to pressure/velocity is worth your time. -hint-

I find the toughest challenge to be unidentified scrap. The 300 lb I have is too hard to scratch with a thumbnail. And not all bricks are alike.

I am thinking I will just put it all in a big pot over a propane burner and melt the whole lot. Probably add 15 or 20 lbs of 30% Antimony and 10 lbs of Tin then see how the mould fills and see if I get any antimony haze as the bullets cool. Then adjust from there.

You’re telling us you don’t....

Have a flintlock?

Don’t know how to recharge primers?

Make black powder?

My sincere condolences.

I miss the days of lead and antimony wheel weights. I am afraid that I will drop a zinc weight in my pot, so I have quit using WW.

Curious that. I separate zinc weights from the good stuff easy. They float on molten lead WW.

Spot on. A good thermometer can show when to stop with temp & not melt the zinc.

ANNND, save the zinc. Folks are testing bullets made with it. The one article I read about seemed to be positive about it.

Pure zinc?

Everything I have gleaned says a little Zinc ruins the pourability of Lead alloy. I understand it causes wrinkles and other flaws in cast bullets.

And YES, I do need to buy a good thermometer.

December 2020 Guns magazine, an article by Tank Hoover. A 41 mag article but 4 paragraphs about pure zinc bullets They are approx 2/3's the weight of lead but he was impressed enough to pursue them further.

Zinc only messes up lead alloys if you get them hot enough to melt.

Melted lead just after slump with some flux keeps all the goodies and floats the rest.

Bullets of lead alloy can be run to jacketed speeds with heat treating, powder coating or work fine as is if ran under 2000 fps or 20,000 psi., nominally.

Pure lead round balls and shot do a whole lot of things well and have since the last time tyrrany has graced us.

In their defense, they do allegedly live in a Constitutional Republic.

Many want their fiat currency, SSN and all things .gov was never allowed near due to our founding documents, but alas, oaths are a joke because many folks want cake AND to be left alone to eat it, and it doesnt work that way.once all responsibility is granted to a politician....who has none.
