Yeah I don't see the point of letting murderers live - they have forfeited any "right" to rehabilitation. Their victims don't get any further chances for anything. On Australia Day here in Brisbane we had a juvenile on drugs in a stolen car kill a young couple (the woman also happened to be pregnant) - they can't release his name because he is a juvenile and they have to protect his identity. I kinda thought he would forgo any special treatment because he killed innocents. We need the death penalty down here. Yes we do, I am over pandering to the spiteful murderous bastards.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

oh the Irony. 2 Penal colonies fighting over who should keep the troglodites We were thinking of sending them to you but since the election you already have enough problems. So we will just keep shipping them to NZ.

oh the Irony. 2 Penal colonies fighting over who should keep the troglodites Given that your country has by far the highest prison population in the world, and the highest incarceration rate in the world - several times ours - it would seem that the US is the prison colony now.

Even though NZ wasn't a penal colony there are claims that some of the deportees ended up here. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/78...s-are-descendants-of-australian-convictsStealing a loaf of bread because your family is starving and getting sent to a penal colony in Tasmania was deplorable. Most victims of that dark episode in history would probably be considered good civic minded citizens these days. The death penalty has it's pros and cons.

Even though NZ wasn't a penal colony.. NZ was made part of the official territory of the penal colony of NSW prior to First Fleet departing Portsmouth harbor, May 13th 1787. (as per ammended commission by instruction of the Court of St.James, April 25th 1787..the orig. commission being ratified Oct.12th 1786) and if one reads the proclamation of 1788 concerning the establishment of the colony under Arthur Phillips ammended commission as Governor of the colony and representative of the Crown, you will find it to be true. Re: "all the islands adjacent in the Pacific Ocean within the latitudes of 10°37'S and 43°39"S.." Basically it included the whole of the North Island and a healthy portion of the South Island.

Excellent response, and that shows the real irony doesn't it?

Sounds like maybe some kiwis are in denial? Could simply be many don't know the actual documented details of British colonial history and if one were to quiz Australians on it, you would also find them lacking such knowledge. Some long held common beliefs about James Cook are plain wrong, yet they perpetuate. eg: Some seem to think Cook sailed into Botany Bay and claimed Australia for the British Crown. Or ask them when and where Cook and Phillip first had British colors raised and what flag was raised by them and I bet most don't know. But hey we are talking about common folk who think Breaker Morant was Australian coz that's the lasting impression they got from a directors artistic license script. But what can one expect when even the Oz PM gives the wrong impression of history to the nation by sending the replica of the HMS bark Endeavour on a circumnavigation of the continent despite the fact neither the Endeavour or Cook having ever undertaken such a voyage.

Ouch. My parents emigrated here from Germany after the war as did many others from other counties. So I guess in your mind that means that we are a mixture of convicts and war criminals. Wikipedia reckons that 20% of the current Aussie population is descended from convicts. 0.7% of the USA population is in prison while 0.16% of the Aussie population is in prison. Still think you're a pot calling the kettle black at best, ignorant and hypocritical at worst.

No nation was founded with the establishment of the NSW Penal Colony. Even after establishing a number of colonies on the mainland, there still was no such thing as an actual nation called Australia. By the time of Federation, free settlers and migrants and their offspring overwhelming made up the bulk of the population. Sources indicate approx 160,000 convicts reached the shores (1788-1868) and the population of Australia (Federation 1901) was put at near 3.8 million. And clearly by that time many transported but now X-convicts were already long dead. Of the still living one's who chose to remain, it was some decades past the transportation sentences they had served.

Penal colony. Ho-Lii...crap. (Respect for our Aussie/Kiwi cousins)
Why throw that up?
Longtime ago, in a far away time.
Kinda like American slavery. My work today has too many issues to waste time on factoids from the decade before last.
If an American want to stick his nose into Australian issues, the China issue is much more important. To all English language nations.
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!
